2 Paryatna Samiti (PS) is one among the various civil society organizations operating in the Jaisamand catchments focusing on Community Development and Natural Resource Management. All the government and non-government organizations/institutes working in the region with their visions and resources have some specific and successful components along with some missing links. All these isolated efforts if brought together could give way to have effective resource management in such a way that both floral and faunal diversity of the Jaisamand and its integrity is maintained. In the year 2002, with a mission of evolving sustainable model for conserving all forms of biodiversity and natural resource base of livelihood, Prayatna Samiti identified Sawna Macro watershed, where different stakeholders have been operating with their varied approaches and components. With the grant support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) being implemented by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Government of India PS identified different gaps and interventions to address the missing links in sustainable management of natural resources. Jaisamand Lake is symbol of judicious efforts by human being for development of the then Natural Resources to sustain livelihood of community. This lake constructed in the year 1727 has completed nearly 300 years of varied climatic and still provides hope for millions of people in the region. Changes in Climatic condition and human activities have accelerated the process of degradation of natural resources in the catchments. The Jaisamand community includes 1800 square kilometers of undulating terrain, 418 villages, 263 micro watershed spread over in five Panchayat Samiti of two districts demands for immediate action to revive its environment and glory

3 Project Objectives: The project aimed to experience some of the technical, social, institutional and process related interventions those can help in revival of Sustainable Livelihood in Jaisamand Catchments. It followed the principles of interlinking two of the focal area of GEF i.e. Land Up gradation and Biodiversity as foundation pillars of sustainable development through following immediate objectives: To treat the gap in Savna Watershed increasing local Biodiversity of the project area. To revive local species of fodder and forest trees. To promote the diverse cropping pattern. To address the livelihood needs of the people in the village Semliya, Ratanpura, Mokla Talab through conservation and regeneration of natural resources. Demonstrate how this treatment will lead to improving the Biodiversity in the Jaisamand catchments area. Activities & Achievements In order to improve moisture situation and harvesting water two Anicuts (Semliya and Moklatalab) recharging 6 wells and 3 wells respectively and four Talai (3- Moklatalab: 1- Ratanpura) developed benefiting 100 families Environment awareness and education among the children of the Jaisamand catchments area. Capacity Building of the people of the adjacent watershed of Jaisamand Catchments for the replication of the process for environment conservation and regeneration. Capacity Building of NGOs/GOs working in Jaisamand Catchments area. To establish and test best suitable techniques in Watershed Management. Contour Trenches, Farm bunding and Gully Plugs are developed in 50 Ha Private land (Moklatalab), 50 ha Common Pasture (Nichala Semliya) New cultivated land is developed at Moklatalab, and Ratanpura.

4 Strengthening Institution of pasture, grass seeding and active role by community protected 50 ha pasture. Chaff cutters and Feed Manger demonstrations in three villages Medical fund is generated and vaccination camps organized to support animal husbandry based livelihood Vermi-compost demonstration with six Self Help Groups 35 farmers demonstrated cultivation of improved varieties of maize & moong (Khariff) and Gram & Mustard (Rabi) Micro plans development exercise in outreach area of Sulawas, Boriya, Ambaguda, Nandivella, and Rawatpura. Farmers exposed to different development interventions at Patiya, Bagpura, Ogana, Bhilwara, and various places in western Maharastra Training on Agriculture on technical aspect of Kharif crops was organized at directorate of extension (MPUAT) Udaipur. Organising regular meeting in the area and 10 SHGs are formed at Moklatalab, Uppali Semliya, Nichalli Semliya and Ratan pura. Essay and Painting competition on World Nature Day and visits of children to Jaisamand Sanctuary and lake on world Wild Life Day. World Environment Day celebration with 12 NGOs and community leaders in Catchments Farmer's Day organized with 244 participants from 35 villages in Catchments Joint workshop with GO+NGOs+Farmers

5 Outputs and Achievements All the interventions resulted in following outputs and achievements in the Savna Macro watershed. Following table gives details of each outcome its related output and also activities so far; in relation with the basic purpose it was undertaken. 500 families have learned about organic manure, fodder saving, feeding habits, vaccination, Wider understanding and networking of different NGOs, Villages, Government department and implementing agencies in the catchments area of Jaisamand. The community in five Outreach villages could development resources micro-plan approach. 200 School going children from the Bambora river basin in the catchments area of Jaisamand are more aware about their Natural resource of their area reflected during essay and drawing competition and visit to Jaisamand Sanctuary. 50 Hectare protected wasteland is converted into good pasture and biodiversity area with 110 plant species fauna. 90 plant species are regenerated within two years its self and many more expected to join in at the later stage out of this 23 are plant species, 27 are trees and shrubs while 40 are fodder species. Among all these 14 species are palatable for human being also In all 41 species of fauna is noted in the pastureland plot where in 23 are birds, 10 are reptiles and eight are wild animals Enhanced water harvesting, with increased water availability helping around 50 families getting assured Khariff and rabi crops. 6 Future Ahead. The task of revival of Jaisamand Catchments is huge demands convergence for foundation building in following major themes. As compared to the task of Revival of Jaisamand Catchments the project is very small size, but as indicated right from the beginning and in earlier description also it is good starter which is designed to prepare ground for expansion and further replication in Testing and demonstrating appropriate approaches in land management for improving biodiversity in the private lands. To evolve technological and institutional solutions for employment beyond monsoon through Innovative Land Use Systems and Additional area under production Alternate Land Use Systems Water budgeting approach for biodiversity enhancement around traditional institution of Well Sharers. Decentralized Water Harvesting o cover larger area and precipitation in terms of spread and also beneficiary coverage. Protecting crops, varieties and species to sustain livelihood poor. Exploring and promoting vegetation diversity in forest, pasture and wastelands of catchments area as a solution to sustain livelihood. Propagating approach of Eco Clubs in the area biodiversity conservation movement in the area. Participatory approaches in Organic Farming as an approach of bio-diversity enhancement. Climatic conditions offer us a good opportunity to make a slow shift of around 20 % of its higher slope regions into Horticulture Bowl for Udaipur Integrated WADI approach for managing household demandand supply situation of multiple products. Long duration and semi permanent crops of both Cash and Medicinal Value such as perennial Tuar, cotton (Dev Capas), Papita, Mal Kangni, etc. Participatory research with community Economizing on fodder diversity in beed, fields and wastelands. To evolve specific approaches of alterative occupation so a to check migration Promoting Vegetation Growth in the area. Contact Mr Mohan Dangi Prayatna Samiti, Bambora Address
