1 EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE MARKET REPORT August 2018 Tuesday 28 th TB Restricted Sale 173 CATTLE - MONTHLY btb RESTRICTED (ORANGE) MARKET AT 4.30PM Auctioneer: Simon Alford Prime Steers to 225ppk Prime Heifers to 218ppk Barren Cows to 167ppk Store Cattle to 1105 As with regular unrestricted auctions our August sale of TB restricted cattle saw excellent returns for any well bred and fed sorts but any weaker or lessor types were more difficult to place. The sale kicked off with a fantastic entry of Bazadaise bred prime cattle from Michael & Stephen Harvey of Hennock with top quality steers (26m) to 225ppk, 220ppk and 217ppk and realising to 1496, followed by heifers with the same comments at 218ppk (x2) and 216ppk and totalling to The barren cow section was also headed by the Harveys with a lean Blonde cow fetching 167ppk and 1105 whilst South Devon barreners from Phil & Dawn Cleave of Holne saw 140ppk ( 917) and Herefords topped at 137ppk ( 1053) for Dan & Helen Partridge of Dunsford. Other native breed cows ran to 120ppk ( 886) for John Lawler of Nomansland with dairy bred types to 127ppk and 854 for a Holstein Friesian from Andrew Poole of Lapford. An entry of store cattle which lacked any really strong forward kinds still topped at a very decent 1105 for a trio of smart British Blue steers (21m) from the Jordan family of Spreyton, these were followed by a couple of bullocks of the same breed at 990 for Michael Walters & family of Denbury and a pen of three well bred Stabiliser cross steers (17m) from Mark Irish of Ashburton at 860. Other steers of note included Hereford crosses (16m) at 875 for Fred Janes of Moretonhampstead and Angus cattle to 865 for John Reddaway & Sons from the same parish. Store heifers rose to 1070 for a pair of solid looking Limousin and Charolais crosses (27m) from Nick & Margaret Lugger of Modbury with a bunch of three British Blue females (22m) from the Jordan family drawing 965 a head and a single suckler bred Simmental (28m) making 950 for Jeremy Brown of Poltimore. Later born heifers from Mark Irish saw a pair of Stabilisers (15m) looking good money at 760 apiece. Our next Orange Market sale of cattle from TB restricted holdings at Exeter will be held on Tuesday 25 th September with entries for licensing closing on Tuesday 18 th September. 4 Rural Reflection August 2018 The lack of wet weather continues to cause concerns amongst many, not just throughout the South West but also further a field. Having said that, I don t think we have recorded such a straight forward harvest back at home with the wheat having been completed by the first week of August. I can t remember the last time that this has taken place. Yields seem to be up and down but farmers perhaps happier than first thought with straw being a constant topic for the past month seeming to be yielding well, in particular on the better arable land where the ground didn't lie wet throughout the spring months. With regards to fodder and straw, what a difference six months makes. During January, February and March every field throughout the South West benefited from some sort of silage stack tucked away in a corner, however, with a long and wet spring this has now gone and the grass is not there to replace these stocks. Next month we are going to be undertaking a fodder sale and are currently inviting entries from clients who may have surplus fodder situated on their holdings. The phone continues to be busy with enquires into whether we have any fodder or straw to market and would ask any clients that have any potential fodder to market to contact either my colleague James Morrish or myself who can help accordingly. Although a little late, a couple of weeks back I undertook the process of submitting a number of hedgerow derogations on behalf of clients looking to cut hedges prior to the 1st September in order to undertake the reseeding of grass or fodder crops. For a change it was recognised that the RPA were most helpful and efficient in undertaking this process and we received a quick and positive response. I take this opportunity to inform farmers that if they are looking for this type of derogation in order for them to get on to the land and cut field boundaries before the 1st September then please get in contact and we can complete and submit the required application. It has been a busy month for valuations for the Kivells team and we have received an influx of bank lending valuations which can only be a positive note, with farm businesses looking to purchase additional land and expand farm holdings or increase business size, in despite of the potential Brexit issues we are looking to face in seven months time and with the current commodity and livestock prices. Valuations are an important aspect of are professional work and the Kivells team are often out undertaking such tasks for secured bank lending, probate, other tax purposes or for asset planning. The Kivells team continue to be busy with land and farm sales, although having said that the last six weeks have proven perhaps a little slower than liked, with holidays being the priority for many rather than looking to relocate or perhaps looking to put property on the market. Our Holsworthy team have just launched a truly fantastic farm, being Coldridge Barton Farm situated near Crediton and we are looking to bring a number of other properties onto the market this autumn. As always, if you are thinking of selling any type of agricultural, equestrian or amenity property then our Rural team are here to help and can provide a free market appraisal on request.

5 As we hit August, the end of the show season is near with the team having just completed Honiton and Okehampton Show. These local rural shows continue to be up against all aspects, whether the weather, local support or health and safety rigmarole, but it has been pleasing to attend some fantastic shows this summer with the last two in particular proving exceptional, benefiting from a tremendous turn out of people, creating a great vibe, just showing hard that work does pay off. As we begin to hit the beginning of August, the autumn months will soon be upon us. Cereals will soon have finished and minds will be turning to autumn cultivations. Lets hope for a bit of low pressure to sweep across the country, which will not only provide that all important autumn flush of grass, but will also help on arable cultivations. until next time...
