How will the Survey Information be Used Help individual livestock producers by providing information to enhance efficient production Help livestock producers and their private veterinarians identify health problems and take early action Recommend changes in farm-management practices that will reduce health problems More on page 5 in the Interviewers manual (IM)

Phase of NAHMS Phase will be take place from October 4 th through November 5 th, 207 To be eligible for Phase, an operation must have had a least or more beef cows during January, 207 through December, 207 A pre-survey letter and the NAHMS 207 Beef Cow-Calf Study backgrounder were sent to the selected operators

Page Total injections do not have to add to 00 percent as some could contain an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory

Record the percentage of each specific antibiotic administered 80 Page 5 5 5

Operator familiarity with bovine diseases Page Record only code per line

Page 7 Siri The Hypothetical Scenario, How would the operator handle a disease outbreak Siri

Section E Other Animals and the Environment

Page 8 Physical contact with beef cattle on the operation 2 2

Beefmaster

Page Physical contact with the beef cattle s feed or minerals

Winter and spring includes the months of December through May 4 2 Page 9 If the operator has seen evidence but not the wild hogs themselves, enter a 2,, or 4 as appropriate and include a comment If a well is used to fill a cistern, answer yes to both cistern (a) and well (b & c)

For Question 4, we want to count the round-trip for the cattle and not the operator Example: Operator drove the cows to another state and dropped off, returned home, and then drove back to pick up the cows, that s one round-trip for the cows Page 22 What if scenario for question 5 on page 6 in the IM

Santa Gertrudis

Page 26 Type of visitor on the operation 6 Emphasis on contact with the cattle Record the number of unique visits, not the number of unique people 4

Page Visits and visitors during the average month Medium to large livestock operations will most likely have employees

The purpose of Section G is to estimate number of operations that are aware of the Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program and that follow BQA recommendations Page 28

Maine-Anjou

Section I Conclusion

Page 4 Notice how & 2 differ All of the operations in NAHMS had beef cow(s) in January 207. Any record that reports zero beef cows (4), out of business (5), or out of scope (7) will need detailed comments (Page 5) but DO NOT INCLUDE ANY PII on the NAHMS questionnaire.

Reasons for consent refusals (2) or Phase refusal () on the previous question. Check only one and enter in the code box. Page 4

Page 6 DO NOT WRITE IN THE OPERATOR S NAME, PHONE NUMBER, OR ANY PII Please remember to complete the information in the Red box 4xxxx

Very Important Point Remember your job as the enumerator is to ask the questions as they appear on the questionnaire and not to provide veterinary advise Do not get lost in the weeds

Questions Regarding Phase

Phase 2 Phase 2 will take place in late-january 208 through mid-april of 208 and will involve a face-to face interview by a Veterinary Medical Officer and optional participation in biological sample collection Any results from the biological samples can be provided to the operator Those operators that complete Phase 2 will be eligible to have Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) testing conducted on their entire spring calf crop and to have a forage sample tested for nutrient content at no charge Additional information regarding phase 2 can be found on pages 7 and 72 in the Interviews Manual

Who Qualifies for Phase 2 Completed NAHMS Beef Management Survey Phase They had or more beef cows at any point during January, 207 through December, 207 If both qualifications are met ask the operator if they are willing to sign a consent form A signed consent form will allow USDA-NASS to release their contact information to USDA-APHIS so they can participate in Phase 2 A producer will be eligible for Phase 2 if a consent form is signed Phase 2 is not mandatory, consent does not obligate producer

Consent Form Two consent forms will be included with each assignment kit The signed copy will be sent to the office The other will remain with the operator for their reference

Pre-printed label Consent Form Do not make any adjustments to the label on the consent form

Completed by the operator Completed by the enumerator
