4 Population. The eight villages covered by the project have over 1175 households (average size of household: 5.5). The level of migration to find work is high especially for men (78%) while women usually migrate as a result of marriage. About 62 % of households in the project area live below the national poverty line and 15 % are at risk. The level of illiteracy is high particularly among women and access to extension services is lacking. Economic activities. About 90 % of the households are involved in agriculture and small trade. They use an agro-silvo-pastoral production system: with cereals such as wheat, barley, corn, and sorghum; pulses, and to a lesser extent vegetables and fruit trees (olive/fig); livestock include cattle, with a predominance of sheep and goats. The level of mechanization is low.

6 4. GENERAL W+ ACTIVITIES INFORMATION General Information W+ Standard Applicability Provide a brief description of the rationale for applying the W+ Standard and selected domains (Reason or opportunity) The project began implementation in 2016 with the objective to increase incomes and improve livelihoods of communities, in particular by supporting women. Handicraft activities The project will organize trainings in handicraft to develop local women skills and improve their employability as well as encourage income-generating activities. Agriculture & Livestock activities The main livelihoods in the project area are agriculture and livestock but the productivity of those activities is low. While women are responsible for the children s education and household chores, they also play an important role in crop maintenance and livestock management. Due to traditional gender roles, women face higher constraints to access jobs outside of agriculture. In order to improve their income, the project will support rural women and men through: Trainings in crop production to improve productivity (cereals, pulses, arboriculture) for self consumption and for trade when there is surplus; Trainings in livestock management and milk production, and support to establish milk collection centers Trainings in cooperatives operations and management Two agricultural cooperatives have recently been created in the commune of Khmis Anjra (one cooperative in the village of Fahamine Sawai Elkheir and the second one which includes the villages of Mlaleh and Dar Kachana- Al Amal oual Jidia). Two other cooperatives are being established (ongoing proceeding). ZUdTlBdXM/view Traditionally, women are less involved in public affairs and have less access to financial resources than men. Women headed households are particularly vulnerable. Based on a 2015 study in the project area, 85% of women that participated in focus groups are illiterate, 6%

7 went to primary school and 9 % to high school. Women confirmed that decisions at the household level are made by their husband. The project intends to contribute to the improvement of this situation through: Support to establish 4 agricultural cooperatives and 2 handicraft / sewing women s association or cooperative Trainings in cooperative management with sensitization on the importance to engage women and men in decision making bodies and processes (women as members and decision makers). In 2016, the project supported the creation of a women s association (Al Amal) in the village of Fahamine that aims to improve women s alphabetization, and provide handicraft training. wbtjadu0/view. The project promotes gender equality through other activities including access to health services (mobile dental unit), and education. The project has signed a partnership with the Association Anjra for the school transport of 76 Students from Fahamine, Mlelah and Dar Katchana, aged between 7 and 14 (53 girls and 23 boys). The project supports school transportation fees for children, particularly girls living in remote villages and sensitizes families on the importance to send girls to school (education of boys is usually given preference over that of girls in particular if there is a cost associated). The W+ application will focus on the Income & assets, Knowledge and Leadership benefits of the project. The application of the W+ Standard will allow ACWA Power Khalladi to better understand and measure the project s impact on women s empowerment. In addition, W+ units generated will be used for further empowering women s groups and cooperatives in the selected project areas.
