1 ISSUE 166 SPRING 2009 Founded in 1959 by Ray and Mary Tischer, Green Velvet Sod Farms began as a small farm in Bellbrook, Ohio. Ray had a homebuilder friend who asked him to consider growing the new phenomenon in home landscaping ~ sod. Ray and Mary started with about 4 acres of sod, slowly purchasing equipment and literally grew the sod business. In the 1980 s Green Velvet s customers started asking for seed, fertilizer and other products. Green Velvet grew again in response to customer needs. In 1987 Ray and Mary s son, Randy and his wife Beth took over the family business, allowing them to retire. Sod production moved to the Snider Road Farm in 1990 where Green Velvet now grows nearly 600 acres of turfgrass sod. In 2001, Green Velvet became the 17th member of a buying cooperative called PrimeraTurf, giving it access to a wide range of golf, sports turf, landscaper and ground maintenance products. Randy says, Sod brought us to the party, but we re also able to offer a large selection of turf products at prices that are competitive with the national chains.
