1 Guidelines for the Travel Diary Number of Travel Diaries per Village 1. About 20 travel diaries will be done for every village surveyed. The number may vary slightly, depending upon the number of households per village and the village mix of vocation and gender. Selection of Vocation Categories/Individuals for Travel Diaries 2. The selection of individuals to record 24-hr travel diaries shall be made on the basis of household category, vocation, gender, and socio-economic factors. Generally, all major vocations, age and gender groups within the village will be represented by the Travel Diary. Selection of categories to be interviewed for travel diary purposes will be made by the Study Team, in consultation with the concerned PO, from the Village Profiles furnished by the PO. A possible example of such selection is given below : From the village profile Table-(iii), the following information will be available, which shall form the basis of selection of the travel diary categories. 2 Notes : (1)For female headed households, (category J of table ii of village profile), an additional female head of household may also be interviewed for travel diary. (2) One transport vendor from Table (iv) of village profile may also be interviewed. 3. Once the selection has been done by the Study Team, it will be up to the survey team to determine which individuals will be interviewed, so as to give maximum socio-economic, cultural, age-gender, and special diversity within the village. 4. Summarizing the selection of individuals for travel diary will be a three-stage process : Furnishing Table (iii) at the village profile stage by the concerned PO Selection of Categories by the Study Team, based on Table (iii) Selection of Individuals by the Survey Team during the Stage II survey. 5. The selection of individuals should be done from within the same households interviewed earlier for forms Q-1 to Q-3. Schedule of Travel Diaries 6. The travel diaries are scheduled to be conducted on Day 4 of the 4-day village household survey. The timings/days may however be altered if so locally decided/required by the survey team. Entry Guidelines 7. The travel diary questionnaire consists of two sections, i.e., the Time-based Diary Tables & the General Questions. Cover Sheet 8. Enter the same corresponding Household Number as that used for forms Q-1 to Q Enter the Household Category from Table-A 10. For Vocation, see Table-B in this document. 11. For Vocation Category, codes have to be inserted from Table-B in this document. Tables 12. The reference (code) tables are the same for all the question-tables to be filled in and should be kept as a separate bundle for easy reference. 13. For all the tables, questions should be asked, starting from column a. Thus questions would start on a daily time basis, from the start of day to the end of day. 14. In column b, it has to be mentioned whether related travel is within or outside the village. 15. In column c, the travel frequency for every chore has to be mentioned, based on codes from Table-C. If a matching category is not found, the closest category code has to be inserted. 16. In column d, the travel time in hours or minutes has to be entered. 2

3 17. In column e, the travel distance in kms has to be entered. If the respondent replies in any other unit, the interviewer needs to convert it into kms. 18. In column f, the travel/transport mode has to be entered from Table-D. 19. In column g, the Access Type codes have to be entered from Table-E. 20. In column h, the Access Condition codes have to be entered from Table-F. 21. In column i, the Load Carried has to be given, along with the unit in which the respondent replies. 22. In column j, the Gender/Age/No. of those accompanying the respondent have to be entered as for e.g., M/15/2 for two 15-year old males and F/12/1 for one 15 year old male. 3
