5 Schedule of Events WEDNESDAY JUNE 27, 2012 WEDNESDAY MORNING Local-To-National : Enabling & Uniting American Agriculture American agriculture is an intricate system of interconnected geographies, businesses, people, processes and data, where even a subtle change in one area can ripple across the country. In today s sessions, we move from our farm-and-field focus to begin exploring regional and national interconnectivity. Our presenters will help you take a fresh look at the power of people and place (geography); enabling infrastructure such as wireless broadband, roads, rail, and rivers; complex financial and market systems, and the growing role of technology as a driving force throughout agriculture. Matt Bechdol, moderator of today s sessions, is the founder and President of GeoSilos, a consulting firm focused on leveraging place-based solutions for food & agriculture challenges. For fifteen years, Matt has specialized in place-based solutions for agriculture and natural resources. Matt began his career as a consultant at NASA investigating imaging, wireless, and GIS technologies for precision agriculture and then spent a decade at ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute) where he managed a team supporting USDA s technology, business, and policy integrations to solve agricultural problems. WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON Global : How Our Shrinking World Impacts U.S. Farms Global agriculture is a massive system of systems, where geopolitical issues, trade and monetary policies, population dynamics, and food safety and security concerns will crisscross the globe in a real-time string of information and data. Global trade, supply, demand and price can be immediately affected. Within this system, U.S. agriculture acts as a tremendous lever in technological innovation and the basic market forces of supply and demand. This afternoon s presentations will focus on planning for success and the opportunity U.S. farms hold for global food supplies. They ll offer a big-picture view to help you navigate through complex issues and develop your farm s long-term strategy. Matt Bechdol and Mike Martin chair these sessions.
