1 CITY OF LOS ANGELES GREENWASTE RECYCLING PROGRAM Why do we recycle? California Assembly Bill 939 mandates that all municipalities must reduce amount of green waste sent to the dumps by 50% by the year

3 PHASE THREE Program began: 1998 Who was involved: Street Tree Division, Sanitation, Recreation and Parks, the Dept. of Water and Power Staffing requirement: 1-Supervisor 3-Equipment Operators 4-Truck Operators 10-Laborers Equipment used: 2-Morbark 1300 Tub Grinders 1-Morbark 1100 Tub Grinder 3-Skiploaders 5 18-wheelers Processing Location: Van Norman Reservoir (approx. 600,000 sq. ft.) Approx. 60,000 tons of greenwaste processed annually. Greenwaste Streams Tree trimmings generated by City crews and contract crews. Yard trimmings from residential areas.

7 Staffing Requirements 2 Supervisors 5 Equipment Operators 7 Truck Operators 22 Laborers Required Equipment Three tub grinders are used to grind tree trimmings and yard trimmings into 2 4 inch mulch. Two trommel screens are used to aerate the yard trimmings and separate the coarse mulch from the fine mulch. Four skiploaders are used to mix the yard trimmings with the tree trimmings and to load the mulch into trucks for delivery. 12 Finished Product Mulch is prepared for transport. Mulch is loaded into trucks. 280 tons of greenwaste processed daily. Mulch is delivered to customers.
