2 Common Oceans Program A broad-scale, innovative approach to achieve efficient and sustainable management of fisheries resources and biodiversity conservation in ABNJ. Partnership funded by the GEF (50 millions USD, co-funding: 280 millions) Four specific areas of work: Project 1: Sustainable Management of Tuna Fisheries and Biodiversity Conservation in the ABNJ: the Tuna Project (FAO) Project 2: Sustainable Fisheries Management & Biodiversity Conservation of Deep-sea Ecosystems in the ABNJ: the Deep Seas Project (FAO and UNEP) Project 3: Ocean Partnerships for Sustainable Fisheries and Biodiversity Conservation Models for Innovation and Reform: the OPP (World Bank) Project 4: Strengthening Global Capacity to effectively manage ABNJ: the Capacity Project (FAO and GOF)

Fill data gaps and pilot gear conversion in NIO gillnet fisheries C.4 Monitoring & Evaluation

5 Component 2 Strengthening MCS and Compliance Capacity Building and MCS Network Development and endorsement of MCS Best Practices Inputs from RFMOs compliance sections and MCS experts Action plan for implementation for the consideration of trfmos Creation of a Tuna MCS Network(s) Exchange of information and experiences between compliance officials under the IMCSN framework Regional/Sub-regional fora to exchange information and possibly intelligence and risk assessments Establishment of certification-based course in MCS Development of an MCS course curriculum Organization of training courses Possibly linkages with universities or other institutions

6 Component 2 Strengthening MCS and Compliance Development of MCS Tools Port State Measures Legislative templates for the implementation of PSM were drafted Development of an e-psm module for IOTC Members PSM training in the Indian Ocean and possibly other trfmos Development of Catch Documentation Scheme Best Practices Review existing schemes and develop CDS Best Practices For consideration of trfmos Automation of updates of the Consolidated List of Authorized Vessels (CLAV) CLAV developed by trfmos since 2007 Tools were developed for a real-time automation of the update of the data (

8 MCS Tuna Subnetwork(s) Objective: to share MCS knowledge, information and lessons between MCS practitioners MCS Tuna Subnetwork with communication tools, i.e. forum, mailing list, etc. for its members (with moderation) Restriction rules and procedures should be defined for sharing sensitive information, i.e. intelligence reports, threat assessments Smaller subregional networks Need to integrate expectations of trfmos and their members Some examples of MCS subregional networks, i.e. FFA, Fish-I Africa no duplication build on experience and contribute ideas on how the subnetwork(s) should/could work
