2 Invitation Dear friends, Indian Society for Sheep and Goat Production and Utilization (ISSGPU) invites you with great pleasure to its Annual Conference and National Seminar on Small Ruminants: National scope on up-scaling production to products value addition and their safety to be held at ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Goats, Makhdoom, Farah, Mathura on 9-10, November, ISSGPU The Indian Society for Sheep and Goat Production and Utilization (ISSGPU) established in 1982, with nearly 1000 life members is an active society of professionals, engaged in the research and development of sheep and goat production and utilization in the country. The ISSGPU supports the spread of the latest research achievements and developments for enhancing production from these two small ruminants. The registered office of the society is located at ICAR-CSWRI, Avikanagar, Rajasthan. The Indian Journal of Small Ruminants is an official journal published by the society both in print media and in online version. Theme of the seminar Livestock sector act as a support pillar for the Indian farmers livelihood particularly when the crop failure have become very common these days. Small ruminants such as goats and sheep play similar role for marginal and landless farmers. Small ruminant husbandry throughout the world including our country is mostly based on meat production. Significant proportion of this meat in the western world is processed into different value added products to create variety, improve shelf life, convenience and to satisfy consumer demand for various attributes. Value addition also creates job opportunity and farmers get better return. Nonetheless major chunk of all meat including meat from sheep and goats in India is consumed in the form of fresh meat and only 1-2% of total meat is further processed. India is not untouched with the influence of urbanisation and globalisation and at the same time awareness and purchasing power of the consumers have significantly increased. Thus the demand for various value added, convenient and safe sheep and goat products has augmented especially in the urban area. It is the time to shift our focus from primary production of small ruminants to further processing of their produce. Food safety while processing into secondary products should properly be addressed to make them globally competitive.

3 Focus areas Small ruminant improvement through genetic intervention Improvement in the productivity of small ruminants via advanced physiological and reproductive approaches Nutritional approaches to enhance small ruminant growth and quality of their products Advances in the health management of small ruminants Post-harvest technology: wool, meat and milk and their further processing Socio-economic aspects in small ruminant production Awards To recognise the outstanding contribution in the field of research on sheep and goat production and utilisation, ISSGPU confer following awards as mentioned below: ISSGPU Fellow Award Life members of ISSGPU are requested to visit for more information.
