Outline 1. Outlook of CSA in the Sub region 2. Major CSA initiatives & Key achievement in the region 3. Opportunities 4. Challenges 5. Next step

Outlook of CSA Outline Eastern Africa Agriculture and livelihood support must undergo a significant transformation in order to meet the related challenges of food & Nutrition security and climate change Effective climate-smart practices already exist in the sub region and could be up-scaled and outscaled in the agricultural systems

Outlook of CSA Outline Eastern Africa Considerable investment required in filling data & knowledge gaps, research (devt. of technologies, methodologies, & conservation and production of suitable varieties and breeds. Strengthened Human & institutional capacity needed to improve dissemination of climate-smart information and coordination to large areas and numbers of farmers

Outline Major CSA initiatives in the sub region 1. The COMESA-EAC-SADC Programme developed 2. The Africa Climate-Smart Agriculture Alliance (ACSAA) formed 3. The FAO Mitigation of Climate Change in Agriculture (MICCA) Programme established

Major CSA initiatives in the sub region Outline 5. The Eastern Africa CSA Platform formed 6. The Eastern Africa CSA Program developed (supports member states; DPs, policy makers, extensionists &SHP to integrate CSA adoption) 7. Eastern Africa countries supported to develop comprehensive National CSA Programmes (Ke, Et, Rw, Som, Ug through FAO subregional office)

Example 1: EAFF's proposed standard CSA package CSA approach Soil and Water conservation Water harvesting Agro-forestry Farm planning & record-keeping Energy-saving at household level Brief description Contours/ ridges; mulching; band stabilizers Use of appropriate and affordable water harvesting technologies such as underground tanks, roof water harvesting, and construction of water dams Planting woodlots for firewood. Planting fruit trees, and integration of trees in the farm plot Farm layout; enterprise selection to identify which alternative crops/livestock enterprises with which to diversify; crop rotation schedule; Various types of energy-saving cooking stoves; use of biogas (if farmer has animals); solar energy (where affordable) Nutrient management Agronomic practices Composting, mulching, use of cover crops, careful application of fertilizers, and residue management Use of good agronomic practices, crop rotation, use of improved seed varieties and integrated pest management. 12/21/ /21/2017 Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa 7

Example 2 - EAFF egranary SOLUTIONS Decision Making at farmer level egranary is facilitating provision of four key services to the agricultural sector communication and e-extension services, quality services and Market linkage. Farmer makes better informed Decisions and partnerships owing to changing climate inputs access, affordable financial Farmer digital profile Market linkage Farmers access to financial services and related products Certified inputs egranary, collects data and manages all the strategic partners Farmers have assured income and reduction of postharvest losses. Farmers can afford egranary products Pre and post productions loans Multi-peril insurance covers Credit life cover, Better quality inputs reducing loss increasing production Increased production due relevant extension services Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa

Available Opportunities for Outline implementing CSA in the sub region 1. Scale up effective CSA practices exist 2. Political will to provide Policy tools and regional & national 3. Coherence in research (we have research organizations & Devt. Partners supporting research & devt)

Available Opportunities for Outline implementing CSA in the sub region 4. Coherence in investment - Potential for domestic and international private sector investments 5. The population is young and energetic which gives a strong human capital base 6. Acknowledgement of the effect of climate change

Key Challenges in implementing CSA in the sub region Outline 1. High population pressure on over cultivated, eroded, fragmented land (<0.5 ha or less) 2. Few Successful/scalable business/investment models 3. Recurrent & unpredictable drought / few available mitigation programs 4. Limited Knowledge of CSA and its benefits.

Next Outline Step 1. Ensure the Right policies, strategies, governance & Implementation arrangements in place 2. Hightened efforts in Mobilization of technical, financial and investments support at all levels for scaling CSA 3. Awareness, communication & strengthening capacity of stakeholders involved in CSA.
