KAVC FOUNDATION PIGGERY PROJECT REPORT SUBMITTED TO OPPORTUNITY TO DO CANBERRA MARCH 2015 Reporting Period: 1ST FEBRUARY TO 31ST MARCH, 2015 Report Prepared by: JAMES ASIIMWE Date: 01/05/2015 PROJECT: KAVCF Piggery Project OBJECTIVE To breed pigs in order to provide piglets to women in the community and generate an income for KAVCF activities PLEASE PROVIDE BRIEF SUMMARY The breeding process is progressing well and so far our four pigs delivered 21 piglets earlier than expected. We are very hopeful that this project will progress as planned and will generate income for the selected women and promote KAVCF sustainability. OUTCOMES Number of piglets born 7 Number of piglets lost (deaths) Number of pigs sold Number of pigs passed to women Activities undertaken during the period 1. Procure pig feeds and other piggery items COMPLETE FOR THOSE ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN DURING THE QUARTER None n/a n/a In this reporting period, we procured more three jerry cans which we cut into six pieces suitable for drinking water. Our piglets have grown and stopped breast feeding. They therefore have to drink water in their own dwelling place. 2. Monitoring of the project (Liters of fuel for the motorcycle) The staffs of KAVCF have continuously monitored the piggery and the Director himself inspected the piggery farm 4 times. 3. Conduct follow-up meetings and refresher training (Stationary) We conducted one follow up meeting and only 21 (20f/1m) attended out of the 35 expected. When some rains came in, all people went to the gardens and that s why we had a low turn up. The meeting was basically to plan how to make nursery beds and plant the vegetables. The participants insisted that the rainy season has become so unpredictable due to climate change and many of them expressed

unwillingness to plant vegetables at this time. 4. Facilitate a veterinary doctor for on-farm support, trainings and vaccination The veterinary doctor has been facilitated three times in this period to come and vaccinate our pigs. He also treated some which were sick. They all recovered well except one piglet which has remained very weak. 5. Procure seedlings and establish back yard gardens We procured vegetable seeds and tree seedlings for planting. These include water melon, tomatoes, spring onions, nakati, passion fruits and carrots. We also procured Christmas tree seedlings which will create fence for the gardens against animals and also wind breaking. It will also be used to fence and provide cool air to our children s center. KAVC F decided to try and implement this activity although rain is not predictable this season. We shall make the nursery beds in the next month of April and plant them as vegetables in June. We have planned to use the irrigation method to manage climate change issues. Once we KAVCF become successful here, we shall then make women to learn from this demonstration and use the same method at their homes. Irrigation is costly and tiresome given the scarcity of water points in the area but at the end of the season it pays heavily. So it s worth trying. Expenses incurred (nature of expense, was it budgeted for etc) All activities were implemented as planned and according to the budget. Details of other activities (i.e. commercial motorcycle, gardens, pig food crop) The motorcycle is working very well and we haven t experienced any problem with it. It s fulfilling its planned duties of helping in monitoring the project and also the commercial purpose of generating funds for the piggery. It has helped us so much in procuring the processed feeds during the dry spell. Although we experienced the dry spell, we have been lucky because we had earlier planted 2 hectares of maize and sweet potatoes which we have been eating with our pigs. We still have more of this natural food to take us for the next two months. We have also again replanted 2 hectares of maize which will also be ready at the end of July if the rains come and remain constant.

Details of involvement of children & volunteers/community in project activities Other information as relevant We have two ladies and two children who have volunteered and kept our piggery shelter clean and also feeding the pigs. When funds allow, we have planned to train madam Edisa in piggery farming such that in future we hire her labor to work on this farm on a full time basis. She will be trained to vaccinate and treat pigs and good maintenance. This will help to reduce the costs of facilitating the veterinary doctors to help us when they are very expensive. Three pigs have been met again after winning and are expected to deliver another bunch of piglets at the end of July We have a community volunteer who gave us a male pig and stayed with us for a week and it did a successful job on the three pigs. HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS OR CONSTRAINTS THIS PERIOD? (PROVIDE DETAILS) The dry spell has been a big problem this time to all farmers in Uganda. The rainy season changed its course and yet we plant food according to the rain patterns. The plan for vegetable gardens was therefore affected as already explained above. We are also waiting for God s mercy to make rains come such that our piggery feeds planted can grow well and be harvested by end of July. Land wrangles have become so scaring in our project area and we are starting to get worried about our piggery farm. This is because we are two tenants occupying the land for one land lord. The other tenant who is our neighbor was sold off by the land lord without notice yet he had occupied the land for over ten years. Our laws say tenants should be given first priority when the land lord is selling off the land and this was abused. The two are therefore fighting daily and we are scared that our pigs and we might become accidental victims any time. One of our selected households to benefit from the piggery project was attacked with acid over a similar case and the head of the family has since died. He has left with us three children who were already enrolled in our program. We have pledged to render them full support until they complete primary school level of education. HOW DID YOU MANAGE/SOLVE THE PROBLEMS OR CONSTRAINTS? We had to procure processed feeds which were supplied to the pigs along with the natural feeds we planted. This has helped to preserve some natural feeds that will feed the pigs for the next two months. We decided to postpone the planting of vegetable gardens by the women households. However, KAVCF as a project will carry out a demonstration planting using irrigation methods as already explained above. Land wrangles are beyond our control. Once the threat becomes too much we shall have no option other than shifting the piggery farm to our other land where we are constructing the orphanage and school. Our fear is that the person struggling with our fellow tenant might not easily know who owns the pigs. This is because we have previously rented the land in question to plant food for the children in our program. Besides the other tenant does also not live in the land and so we are the only people seen around. PERSONAL STORY

Please provide a significant story and news related to a child/family affected by this project, include photo(s) We shall give good stories after we distribute piglets to the beneficiaries in the coming months.

ATTACHMENT D - FINANCIAL REPORT TEMPLATE Reporting Period: 1 ST February to 31 st March 2015 Report Prepared by: James Asiimwe Date: 1/05/2015 PROJECT: KAVCF Piggery Project Description Amount ($US) Income - sale of pigs Not applicable in this reporting month - commercial motorcycle use $200 - sale of produce from garden / pig feed $100 TOTAL INCOME $300 Expenses - (please list) Procure pig feeds and other piggery items $100 Monitoring of the project (Liters of fuel for the motorcycle) Conduct follow-up meetings and refresher training (Stationary) $50 $50 Facilitate a veterinary doctor for on-farm support, trainings and vaccination $30 Procure seedlings and establish back yard gardens $ 30 TOTAL EXPENSES $260 TOTAL PROFIT $40 HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED FINANCIAL PROBLEMS OR CONSTRAINTS THIS PERIOD? (PROVIDE DETAILS) The only general financial problem that we continue to face is the continued inflation of our currency. 1 USD now costs minimum of USD However, it keeps appreciating and depreciating on hourly and daily basis now days. This means that raising funds internally is very difficult since it requires too much money to get a dollar. People/organizations that have access to external currencies are the ones benefiting so much these days. Technically, the prices for all goods and services have hiked. HOW DID YOU MANAGE/SOLVE THE PROBLEMS OR CONSTRAINTS? We are managing the situations locally using both monitory and non-monitory methods to get everything we need for our project to excel. Although we have some slight pressure caused by the inflation, and mainly hardening the production and supply of pig feeds, the project is progressing very well and we are confident that all the project objectives will be achieved.

PLANS FOR THE NEXT PHASE Procure pig feeds and other piggery items 32 Piglets passed to women 11 Piglets sold Conduct trainings for women in piggery and back yard gardens Monitoring of the project (Litres of fuel for the motorcycle) Conduct follow-up meetings and refresher training (Stationary) Facilitate a veterinary doctor for on-farm support, trainings and vaccination Procure more seedlings and establish other back yard gardens for the beneficiaries Expand the piggery shelter using the proposed method in the previous report. OTHER ACTIVITIES FOR KAVCF IN THE SAME MONTH: 1. We are glad that we completed the roofing of the first three classroom bloke and we shall soon be starting its internal finishing especially flooring and installing doors and windows 2. We also secured an acre of land which expanded our cite for the orphanage/school construction 3. The 113 vulnerable children that we are supporting directly for quality education currently all managed to complete this school term and are now in their holidays. We are now occupying them in other child nurturing skills that are not formally taught in schools like loving their God, community work and other practical skills. 4. We have trained 25 (15f/10m) community members in microfinance and business skills in order to manage their income generating activities very well. Thank you so much for supporting us. We are excited to continue working with you until poverty is reduced to the lowest level in Africa and other parts of the world. James Asiimwe 01/05/2015 Signature Date
