Report prepared by TADESSE G/HIWOT REST SENIOR AGRONOMIST DECEMBER 15, 2011 Tel; ; INTRODUCTION ORGANIC LIQUID FERTILIZER Organic liquid fertilizer is natural or artificial substance containing all macro and micro essential nutrients that improve the growth and productiveness of plants, enhance the natural fertility of the soil or replace the chemical elements taken from the soil by previous crops or other factors and improve the essential micro organisms in the soil. REST has introduced organic liquid fertilizer to enhance the fertility of the soil, as a result to improve the production per unit area of the community and also to produce organic product. The aim of introducing the organic liquid fertilizer is not only for the improving the soil fertility, but also address the global current issues of the climate mitigation strategy. Based on these objectives REST in the last year had got 80 litters of organic fertilizer freely from Organic liquid fertilizer producing P.L.C, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. And distributed to a total of 8 farmers found in Kolatem-bien and Kilte-Awlaelo REST project areas. The application of organic liquid fertilizers is using foliage, fertigation and direct spray to the soil. The fertigation organic liquid fertilizer especially, Nitrogen and phosphorus are the two primary nutrients injected through fertigation systems. Fertigation can provide supplemental doses of these nutrients, especially at critical periods during the growing season such as vegetative growth, flowering and fruit filling or blooming. The organic liquid fertilizers used for fertigation such as N.P.K and micro-nutrients to increase vegetable production per area or plant through improving soil fertility. And the farmers were interested on the soluble organic fertilizers using drip irrigation. Objective To evaluate the difference between organic liquid fertilizer, inorganic fertilizer and controlled (with out any application) of the growth of vegetable crops. To introduce and familiarize the organic liquid fertilizer by the farmers, development agent and experts.

Methodology Application status The organic liquid Fertilizer stored in a very cold area. Transport to the project area during the morning or cool time. The fertilizer applied on those farmers having FDK with lifting technology or water pumps and potential open hand dug well for irrigation. First round apply after 20 days of planting, Second round application made after days, during the blooming or flowering of the vegetable or the planting. The organic liquid fertilizer applied based on the recommended rate of two hundred litters per hectare using drip irrigation and water pumps on the farm land and the inorganic fertilizer that is DAP and Urea were applied based on the recommended rate. The 80litters of organic fertilizer dissolved by 160litter of waters in two rounds Crop Tomato (Shanty variety) Onion (Bombay red) Pepper (Marko fana) The area used for organic liquid fertilizer was 0.4 hectare, with inorganic fertilizer 0.2 hectare, the area used for controlled hectare of lands. The amount of fertilizer applied in each plot is measured. During the first round application 40litters of organic fertilize mix with 80litter of water in a container (bucket) and immediately mix to family drip barrels. Before the fertilizer application the beneficiaries wet their plots of land and after moist their plot of lands the liquid fertilizer applied using family drip technology. The organic liquid fertilizer apply in each wereda as follows S/NO REST project areas Unit Distributed Total areatotal in HA. beneficiaries 1 K/Tembien Litters Wukro Litters Total

Litters Result The result on the effect of the organic liquid fertilizer application on yield and yield components are: All treated plants by Organic liquid fertilizer were healthy, fast growth, deep green color, and a much quicker root expansion and rooted vertically and fibrous as a result better yield per plant or per hectare were obtained. Tomato After treated the crop by organic liquid fertilizer,we observed fast growth, deep green and fruit set earlier and the branch, leaf width, length and average number of fruits per plant are 17_ 20 balls and higher than the untreated (7_10 fruit balls per plant) and using inorganic fertilizes (10 15fruit balls per plant). Generally the yield per plant was better than the untreated by %..Treated by organic liquid fertilizer was 440quintal/ha, that is more than 2k.g yield per plant..the untreated yield quintal/ha that is less than 1k.g yield per plant Deep green above ground biomass Attractive for external viewers Tall enough( about 1.20metre length) Fleshy fruit with low content of liquid Disease resistant/tolerant Tomato (Shanty) producing using organic liquid fertilizer in W/K/Awlaelo Tomato treated by inorganic fertilizer Tomato produced with out any treatment

Farmer s evaluate the impact of the organic liquid fertilizer at field visit in W/K/Awlaelo Onion The plant after treated by organic liquid fertilizer, we observed, the plant was fast growth, deep green and early matured and the bulb bigger size than the other treated by inorganic and untreated. In addition to these, the bulb is tasty, good firmness, attractive color, and less water contain. The average yield per sample of plot is 15 quintal that is 300quintal per hectare of lands. Onion treated by organic liquid fertilizer Onion treated by inorganic fertilizer

Pepper The plant after treated by organic liquid fertilizer, we observed, the plant was fast growth, deep green, setting more branch and early matured and the number of fruit per plant is better and large in size than the other treated by inorganic and untreated. In addition to these, the fruit is healthy, earlier matured and flower and fruit setting was better than the untreated and attractive color, the average yield per sample of plot is fruit number per plant, while the other treatment were lower fruit number per plant. Pepper using organic liquid fertilizer Pepper using inorganic fertilizer Conclusion and Recommendation It can conclude that the application of organic liquid fertilizer is very important for vegetable crop development, because it contain not only the macro nutrient but also the essential micro-nutrients which are very important for growth of vegetable crops and improve the soil fertility. As a result; increases the biomass and fruit yield of tomato, pepper and onion bulb. It can be recommended as an alternative to use of inorganic fertilizers and also very essential for restoring the health of degraded soils that are low in organic matter (which increases the organic matter of the soil) and its perform on different application systems, that is; Using fertigation, Injection and Foliar application. It can produce organic product as a result reduce environmental pollution and fertilizer expenditure cost.
