Microwaves for Food Safety Effective & ecological method for reducing Post-harvest losses (PHL)

The Company EMitech s know-how relates to: Electromagnetic shielding for military and civil scopes; Reverberation multimode shielded chambers; Applications of electromagnetic energy for industrial purposes; Planning and realization of electromagnetic energy systems. 4 Application fields Art Disinfestation of cultural heritage in organic material Environment Microwave application for a fast humification proces of organic waste Packaging Pallets disinfestation by means of Dielectric Heating (DH) - a new phytosanitary measure, proposed by Emitech and being approved by the next CPM Meeting in March 2013 for inclusion in FAO-ISPM 15 Agro-food Sanification of foodstuff Detoxification by gluten

Biological infestations of agro-food products The main cause of losses in the Post Harvest phase and in Storage is represented by Biological Infestations which begin on field. Biological Infestations can: Significantly depreciate a lot of products in a very short time

Post-harvest Losses (PHL) Losses From 10 to 50 % (in tropical areas) 25% whole world production About 1/4 of what is produced never reaches the consumer for which it was grown and efforts and money needed to produce have been lost

Conventional disinfestation methods Conditioning of silos and warehouses Controlled atmosphere Extreme temperatures Fumigation Disadvantages: High costs and long treatment times Handling of dangerous chemicals Persistence in food of toxic residues Pollution

Conventional disinfestation methods

Conventional disinfestation methods 120,00 World Cereal Production 110,00 MILLION TONS/YEAR 100,00 90,00 80,00 70,00 60,

MISYA method MiSyA is a physical method that can be used to disinfest all products of vegetable origin infested by pests: Cereals (rice included) Legumes (beans, chickpeas, lentils, etc.) Seeds like pine-nuts Dry fruits Thanks to the heat effects deriving from the interaction between electromagnetic energy and polar molecules (in particular water), it is possible to achieve lethality of pests by overheating immediately when temperature achieves their Lethal Temperature (LT). Mortality tests, conducted over the years, on various species of pests, in all life stages (eggs, pupae, larvae, adults) showed that LTs range from 55 to 60 C.

Microwave Industrial Systems: helicoidal conveyor TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS Shielded structure : Conveyance system: Stainless steel shielded structure with welded elements Helicoidal Management system PLC with PID regulation Total MW power installed: from 6kW to 36kW Absorbed electrical power: from 12kW to 65kW Max Productive capacity: From 0,3 t/h to 2 t/h

Microwave Industrial Systems: rotating tube conveyor For continuous treatments of sensitive products such as pine nuts TECNICAL CHARACTERISTICS Shielded structure: Conveyance system: Stainless steel shielded structure with welded elements Rotating tube Management system PLC with PID regulation Total MW power installed: from 6kW to 36kW Absorbed electrical power: from 12kW to 65kW Max Productive capacity: from 0,3 t/h to 2 t/h

Advantages Full efficacy: 100% mortality rates on pests in all life stages (eggs, larvae, pupae and adults). No significant change in food quality (physical and nutritional characteristics) Absence of polluting effects harmful to operators and the environment No toxic residues in the end products Energy saving

Emitech s clients Our customers acquired by the end of the trial to date, have facts represented our true partners in the development of technology and have allowed us to make it reliable Mills cereals; Mills of gluten-free products; rice mills; Producers of organic cereals and legumes; Agricultural consortiums However, despite the courage of many entrepreneurs who have seen this technology in the resolution to many ethical problems due to pests in postharvest, the market remains wary. The causes are attributable to: - High innovative content of Misya proposed to a sector slow to implement process innovations; - Lack of specific laws that prohibit the use, or limit the use of chemicals; - Lack of funding aimed at encouraging investment in process innovation in the food chain
