2 NOTE: (Before filling the form, please read and understand documents carefully) Introduction: The U.S.-Pakistan Partnership for Agricultural Market Development (AMD) is a USAID funded project that aims to improve the ability of Pakistan s commercial agriculture and livestock sectors to compete in international and national markets in four target product lines: meat, high value and off-season vegetables, mango, and citrus. AMD will act as a catalyst for development and investment in target product lines by actively promoting cooperation and coordination amongst the value chain actors and ancillary service providers. AMD s implementation strategy is underpinned by a strictly commercial and market driven approach with a clear focus on strengthening market access for its partner organizations, and to support international marketing and sales efforts. The objective of the AMD project is to encourage investments in the four target product lines through matching grants and technical assistance, and empowering stakeholders by developing synergies among them to accomplish together what they cannot do alone. AMD will support upgrading and streamlining of supply chains, provide technical assistance to optimize profit margins, and increase participation of women entrepreneurs, ultimately helping make Pakistani meat, high value and off-season vegetables, mango and citrus become more profitable and competitive. Background: Agriculture constitutes the largest sector of Pakistan s economy. This sector contributes 21.4% to its GDP, provides 40% employment and 60% exports. The horticulture sub-sector of fruits and vegetables etc. contributes 11% to the total value addition in the agriculture sector. The national horticulture exports are about million USD ( ). Pakistan is one of the top red chili producing and exporting countries in the world. Chilies are an essential part of everyday food in Pakistan and chili trade plays an important role in the local economy depending on the area and the varieties grown. The average production of chilies in Pakistan ranges between 1.64 and 2.7 ton per hectare, which is slightly lower than the neighbouring countries of India and China. In 2014/15, chilies were grown on more than 62,000 hectares in Pakistan, with a total production of 139,856 tons (Fruits, vegetables and codominant statistics of Pakistan ). Pakistan is among the five top countries that produce chilies and contributes to 4 percent of the total world production. The Sindh province of Pakistan is the main producer of chilies where a number of chili varieties are grown over 52,101 hectares, with an annual production of 129,552 tons. In particular, the Kunri, Umerkot and Mirpur khas regions of Sindh are known as the largest concentrated production areas of red chilies in Asia. Amongst the various types of chili, the Dundicut varieties, such as Longi and Mexi, are the most desired and are highly demanded in the domestic and international markets. Hybrid varieties

3 are also available in the market with good production potential, but do not compare well in quality with the traditional Dundicut varieties in respects of color, aroma and heat index. Rational The AMD Project plans to organize a national Chili conference in Karachi on the 20 th of November The event will be attended by USAID and USG representatives, farmers, processors, exporters, public sector organizations, service provides and academia. At the workshop, through discussion and consultation, AMD s strategy for the Chili sector will be presented. AMD will collaborate with the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, Chili Growers Association Sind, leading processors, traders, exporters and business service providers to organize this conference. AMD required expression of interest (EOI) from potential chili processors, producers, exporters and traders to showcase and promote their chili products, develop linkages with relevant stakeholders, facilitate B2B interaction and develop common synergies for improvement. Booth (1x1 meter) will be provided to selected applicants to display their products at the events. In line with the overarching goal of AMD and the marketing strategy developed, participation in trade shows and other marketing events is a key element of the Project s international marketing strategy. AMD will work towards facilitating participation of partner businesses at leading trade exhibitions and marketing events. The Project s support will include targeted technical assistance for preparatory work prior to each show, facilitation for B2B interactions at the event itself and subsequent support for follow-up upon conclusion of the same.
