Implementation of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources in Ghana Margaret Sumah Deputy Director, Animal Production Directorate & National Co-ordinator AnGR, Ghana

Presentation Outline - Importance of AnGR to Ghana - Ghana s Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR) - Implementation of the GPA in Ghana - Discussion 2

Value of AnGR Livestock supply some 30% of total human requirements for food and agriculture 35% Agric GDP and up to 80% in SSA. 70% of the world s rural poor depend on livestock as an important component of their livelihoods. (NEPAD, 2004; FAO, 2007) 3

Value of AnGR Provide increased economic stability to farmer and household, acting as a cash buffer (small livestock) and as capital reserve (large animals) (Delgado et al., 1999) Provide a range products and services - food, fibre, transport and fuel; manure and draught power Social and cultural importance (Osei-Amponsah et al., 2010) 4

Ghana s Animal Genetic Resources 5

Ghana s AnGR - Ghana has a variety of AnGR which provide the people with employment, income and protein. (MOFA, 1999) - Per capita consumption of animal protein = 16 compared to FAO recommended level of 44.4 g/person/day. 6

GHANA Implementation of the GPA on AnGR 17

Work Done so Far - Characterisation of local chickens phenotypic and molecular - Characterisation of sheep and goats phenotypic - Revamped breeding stations 18

Work Done so Far Educated farmers on AnGR through the National Livestock Development Project Livestock/Breed Associations formed in 35 Districts of 7 Regions 19

Work Done so Far Ghana s NCC on AnGR activated Collaboration Sub-Regional and Global focal points on AnGR 20

Ghana s NCC on AnGR activated 21

Characterization, Inventory and Monitoring of Trends and Associated Risks The NCC plans to: - Undertake livestock census - Characterise of local AnGR breeds - ongoing - Establish monitoring systems to evaluate trends in population size and structure of all breeds 22

23

Sustainable Use and Development The NCC plans to: - Identify and formulate the national programmes and projects proposals based on national priority setting. - implement projects to highlight the value of local breeds and their derived products to improve their marketing 24

25

26

Conservation - In-situ conservation of breeds - protect the animals in their natural habitats NCC on AnGR working with the Ghana Wildlife Department - Involve farmers in implementation of AnGR conservation programmes 27

- Ex-situ conservation - national breeding stations supported to keep adapted AnGR - APD has 6 national breeding stations - Collaborate with the S-RFP on AnGR for West and Central Africa to establish gene banks in the subregion 28

Planned Actions by the NCC 35

1. Collating data to develop a 10-year strategic plan 1. Documenting the contribution of AnGR to ensure that appropriate policies are put in place 2. Highlighting the social, economic and cultural values of AnGR 36

3. Public awareness building - Livestock exhibitions and publication of livestock extension journals/bulletins; mass media. 4. Working with stakeholders to develop sustainable livestock policies and programmes 37

38

Policies, Institutions and Capacity Building - Preparing National Policy - Strategies and Action Plans for AnGR - Developing national legislation (breeding law) to regulate overall breeding activities within the livestock sector - Encouraging young people to take more interest in the field of animal breeding and genetics 39

Challenges Limited funds for AnGR activities Farmers expect a lot of support to keep and manage local breeds 40
