3 POULTRY MONDAY Auctioneer: Graham Merrett The last poultry auction of the year resulted in an excellent sale, with a good variety of stock and plenty of willing buyers. Over 300 head of poultry came under the hammer and a total clearance was achieved. Although we have had 3 live Christmas Turkey Sales, there were still more turkeys on offer this week. Nine 38lb stag turkeys sold upto 25 (all prices per head) 3 geese sold for 20. Alesbury Duck and Drake sold for 10. Cockerels sold well with numerous lots selling upto 9. Always bring your cockerels to Beeston for the best prices. We are open again for the first of the new year sales on the 8 th January. From all of the poultry team have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year and we look forward to seeing you all soon. HORTICULTURAL SALE REPORT Auctioneer: Jonathan Farrall A solid entry of wreaths and plants met strong demand throughout, wreaths were anything between 3 and 16 depending on quality, all tastes and budgets were catered for. Grave pots were generally 2 to 3 and again, there was plenty of choice. Mistletoe sold readily, great quality and upwards of 45 per bundle, bundles of holly again in keen demand at 6-7 per bundle more promised for next week. Some more unusual lots saw planted pigs to 8.50 and Cauldrons to 7. Hedging plants saw Hawthorne to 50p, Beech to 2 and Laurel to 5. Christmas trees sold well once again, most trees on offer would be between 5 and 7 foot in height and generally made between 5 and 8 each. A nice entry of Frazer Fir sold readily to 13 A good selection of local veg met improved demand; Potatoes saw Wilja to 5.50, Monte Carlo to 4.80 and Harmony to 3.50 per bag. Carrots to 2.20, Parsnips to 2.50, Sprouts to 5 but large entries of Cabbage, hard work at around 2 per box. Seasonal entry of culls this week, with demand still remarkably high for all categories of cattle. Cattle a pleasure; as always to sell, with competitive bidding for all weights and grades, selling to a near full complement of buyers. As usual the meated cows flew away to 147 pence for continental cows, and black and whites to 117 pence. Cows are wanted for our next sale date on Friday 5 th January. All buyers in attendance, being the first opportunity to sell culls in the New Year. Market average today coming in at pence or Only three continentals in that!! Well we had a busy ring with 26 buyers purchasing on the day. Best heifers 270+, strong mediums , smaller mediums Very small and young heifers Native Bulls A real flying trade with native bulls in high demand. Top call was 260 for JM&JK Cliffe & Son, followed by DP Nicholas at 258. Only the 4 Herefords which made 240 for WL Jones & Son. Best bulls 240+, mediums , smalls , very smalls Native Heifers A fast trade from the start with the averages being very pleasing. Just like the bulls where have all the Hereford s been? 24 Angus topped at 185 for HF Langley & Partners, 174 for JR&FJ Hocknell and 170 for DP Nicholas. Hereford s to 160 for CB Davies & Partners. 48 Dairy Bulls Very few strong rearers in, with some young bulls to 88 for TS&AE Hartley, Shorthorns to 92 and 85 for Ithell Bro s. Three days before Christmas meant it was never going to be a good day for small dairy bulls. However, we provided an outlet for all those who wanted to clear the sheds before Christmas.
