2 THE CUSTOMER Industry Agriculture Seeds & Crop Protection Turnover Rs. 580 crores (Mar 2014) Reach 9 Lakh Farmers in India Monsanto India Limited (MIL) - a subsidiary of the Monsanto Company, USA - with a presence of more than six decades in India, MIL is committed to help the Indian farmer produce more while conserving sustainably and to be successful. MIL endeavors to boost crop productivity through its advanced research, technology, techniques, best-in-class manufacturing facilities, extensive agronomic activities and on-farm technology development. MIL produces DekaLb and Roundup. MIL's Dekalb is the most trusted brand of high-yielding hybrid maize seeds for the Indian farmer. Roundup, the flagship brand of MIL s Crop Protection Chemicals business is solution for weeds control. THE CHALLENGE DATA COLLECTION Since MIL was dealing with Agri products, the biggest challenge was data collection from farmers across villages. The challenge was Reach in a country like India which has approximately 638,000 villages. MIL had to collect pre season data from farmers across villages which provided them an insight on the level of inventory to stock based on the pre season trends. They had to collect in-season data about the units sold. And they had to collect post season data to understand the yield performance and guide the farmers based on this data. They had Market Development Officers (MDOs) to that but lacked a tool which effectively helps MDOs to do so. THE IMPACT INFO FRAGMENTS The biggest impact was Fragmented Data. As a result of fragmented data, MIL was not in a position to proactively assess the situation and always worked on reactive situations. This led to a lot of dissatisfaction internally and to the farmers. Reactive Responses Business Losses Dissatisfied Customers

3 ORIENT S SOLUTION - QUIKFORMZ Orient Technologies provided a mobility solution called Quikformz as a solution to MIL. QuikFormz is a platform for quickly developing and deploying customised mobility solution for an enterprise across multiple mobile platforms and OS. Orient s Quikformz was able to provide a tool to the MDOs to collect Pre-Season, In-Season and Post-Season data from the farmers. Pre Season Data Collection Orient s Quikformz collected Pre Season data from the farmers such as Who are the Farmers, How much Land to they have, What they Sowed Last year, What were the results and What they plan to Sow this year. This helped them to identify the herd mentality (which is pretty common in farming business) because there is a tendency in the farming community that if one farmer had good results last year, the other farmers will do the exact same thing this year in anticipation of good results. This had an impact on MIL because such a behaviour leads to market development or erosion. THE PRE-SEASON INFORMATION HELPED MIL TO IDENTIFY SUCH MARKET DEVELOPMENT / EROSION TRENDS AND BASED ON THIS THEY WERE ABLE TO TAKE ASSESS THE STOCKING NEEDS FOR VARIOUS VILLAGES. In-Season Data Quikformz had a very simple mechanism to collect In-Season information. During the season, the seed retailers are very busy. So Orient suggested MIL to incorporate bar code stickers in the bags sold by the seeds retailer. These are removable stickers which can be removed when the bags are sold and can be stuck in a notebook. The seeds retailer simply has to take these stickers from the bags sold and stick it in a notebook and write down the farmer s name against it. The MDOs would then visit the retailers periodically and scan the barcodes and associate the farmers name from the database using their mobiles which had a Quikformz mobile application. This solution made data collection a hassle-free exercise for both the retailer and MIL.

4 THIS DATA WAS EXTREMELY USEFUL TO MIL AS THEY WERE ABLE TO COLLECT VITAL SECONDARY SALES INFORMATION AND WERE IN A BETTER POSITION TO PROACTIVELY CONTACT THE FARMERS DURING THEIR POST-SEASON ACTIVITIES. THIS DATA COLLECTION ENABLED MIL TO PROVIDE A VERY GOOD CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE TO THEIR END CUSTOMERS - THE FARMERS. Post Season Data Collection The most important phase for MIL is the post season activity. The success of MIL s products depends on the right guidance provided to the farmers on what they need to do, if faced with certain situations. One-to-One approach to guiding the farmers is extremely important. But for that, they need the vital information of post-season crop performance - after sowing and before harvesting. Quikformz helped MIL to collect this vital data about crop performance by providing a comprehensive data collection application to the MDOs. Through this application, they were able to collect the crop performance data at various stages after sowing. USING THIS DATA, MIL S CALL CENTRES AND MDOS WERE ABLE TO CONDUCT VARIOUS WORKSHOPS TO THE FARMERS PROACTIVELY TO GUIDE THEM IN THEIR FARMING PROCESS. QUIKFORMZ ALSO COLLECTED YIELD PERFORMANCE AFTER HARVESTING USING QUIKFORMZ. THIS PROVIDED VITAL INFORMATION TO THE R&D TO MAKE NECESSARY PRODUCT IMPROVEMENTS. RESULTS INTELLIGENT BUSINESS Quikformz made MIL to take intelligent decisions and become more proactive to the farmers because Quikformz enabled them collect the vital data. The pre-season data helped to stock intelligently. The in-season data helped them to identify the farmers to whom they need to guide. The post-season data helped them to guide the farmers proactively and helped the R&D to make the necessary improvements in the product.
