2 2009 ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA AEASA is proud to be hosting their 47th Annual Conference in the Kingdom of the Zulu at the meeting place of Distinction the Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel which is situated on Durban s (Golden Mile) beachfront with breathtaking views of the warm Indian Ocean. Durban named ethekwini by the Zulu is an exciting, multi-cultural city where East meets West meets Africa in a colourful and unique mix. Influences from Asia, Europe and Africa have created a cityscape that buzzes with sights and sounds of these different cultures and a vibe that lives up to its branding as South Africa s playground. Conference Venue: Elangeni Hotel, Durban Conference Dates: Monday 21 st September Wednesday 23 rd September. Conference Theme: Promoting the competitiveness of South African agriculture in a weakened global economy. Sub themes: 1. Economics education and research for promoting competitiveness in agriculture. This sub-theme encompasses the importance of developing human capital in agriculture, teaching economics to students, and the role of research and development in promoting a competitive agricultural sector. 2. South African agricultural policy: implications for food security and selfsufficiency. This sub-theme is concerned not only with issues of agrarian reform and agricultural productivity in less-developed rural regions, but also the question of whether South Africa's agricultural policy has remained relevant to commercial farming in South Africa. 3. Trade policy and the competitiveness of South African agriculture. This sub-theme focuses on the trade policies of South Africa and its trading partners that have implications for the prices of food and tradable inputs used in agricultural production in domestic markets. 4. Promoting competitiveness through improving farmers' access to markets. This sub-theme deals with addressing constraints to market access by farmers in less developed rural regions of South Africa.

3 Keynote Speakers: Prof. Claudia Parliament is a distinguished Agricultural Economist in the field of Economics Education. She is currently Professor, Department of Applied Economics, University of Minnesota and Executive Director of the Minnesota Council of Economic Education. Claudia received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. She has received prestigious awards for excellence and diversity in teaching. Claudia will present the Simon Brand Memorial Lecture at this year s Conference on the topic of Economics Education. Dr. Ousmane Badiane is the Africa Director for the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). In this role, he coordinates IFPRI's work program in the areas of food policy research, capacity strengthening, and policy communications in Africa. Dr. Badiane received a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from the University of Kiel in Germany. He will address the Conference on "Promoting the competitiveness of African agriculture." Gala Dinner Speaker: Prof. Andre Jooste is a Senior Manager in the Market and Economic Research Centre of the National Agricultural Marketing Council. He received a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of the Free State, and served as chairperson of the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of the Free State from 2004 to He has extensive experience in conducting market, policy, rural and industry analysis. He also specializes in international trade issues and their implications from a country and firm point of view. The topic of his address at the conference is Promoting the competitiveness of commercial agriculture and agribusiness in South Africa. Mr. Robin Barnsley is the current President of the KwaZulu-Natal Agricultural Union (Kwanalu). He is the epitome of a new breed of farmer who is informed, articulate, boasts enviable business skills, and is passionate about agriculture. Through his extensive involvement in organized agriculture, he has developed considerable insight into contemporary agricultural policy issues in South Africa. The theme of his address is "A practitioner's perspective on SA agricultural policy and its impacts on the competitiveness of SA agriculture." Mr. Andrew Makenete is the President of the Southern African Biofuels Association of Southern Africa, Deputy Chairperson of the Agricultural Business Chamber, and a General Manager of Agribusiness at ABSA. He holds a Masters of Agricultural Management degree from the University of Natal, and a Bachelor of Science (Ag Economics) from North Carolina A&T State University. In 2006 the South African Agricultural Writers Association voted Andrew to be the National Agriculturalist of the Year and the South African Grain Millers & Processors voted him to be the Personality of the Year in Agriculture.

4 Contributed Papers: The conference programme will accommodate 31 contributed papers. Contributed papers presented in the contributed paper sessions of the conference will be allocated a total of 25 minutes per paper for oral presentation and discussion. Upgraded contributed papers will be allocated a total of 30 minutes per paper for oral presentation and discussion. Submissions: Papers should be submitted electronically as Microsoft Word documents to Prof Nick Vink: nv@sun.ac.za, Papers must be written in English and must not exceed 7500 words (excluding the cover page and abstract). Each paper must include a cover page with the name(s) of the author(s) and their affiliation(s). Each paper must include an abstract of not more than 250 words. References, Tables and Figures must comply with Agrekon requirements. (Please refer to for details.) By submitting contributed papers, the authors understand that, if their paper is selected, one or more of the authors will personally present the paper at the conference and that such authors are liable to pay the full registration fee. Deadline for submission of contributed papers: Friday 03 July Notice of acceptance/rejection: Friday 14 August Poster Papers: Poster papers presented in the Poster Session of the conference will be allocated a total of 9 minutes per poster for oral presentation and discussion. Submissions: Abstracts for poster papers should be submitted electronically to Dr. Stuart Ferrer: ferrers@ukzn.ac.za. The abstracts should not exceed 200 words. A cover page indicating the name(s) of the author(s) and their affiliation(s) must be submitted with each abstract. By submitting abstracts for poster papers, the authors understand that, if their poster is selected, one or more of the authors will personally present the poster at the conference and that such authors are liable to pay the full registration fee. Deadline for submission of poster abstracts: Friday 17 July Notice of acceptance/rejection: Friday 14 August 2009.

8 Directions: From Durban International Airport: Take the road that goes along the outer side of the airport heading towards Durban, keep to the left when the road splits at the Petrol Station and follow it to the first set of robots, turn Right into South Coast Road (R102). At the next set of robots follow the signs to the M4. Travel all the way along the M4 until you come to the Margaret Mncadi Avenue (Victoria Embankment) off ramp. Take this exit and continue along this road until you reach a robot at the intersection of Margaret Mncadi Avenue and Stalwart Simelane Street (M4), turn left into Stalwart Simelane Street. Continue along this street until you reach the main intersection of Stalwart Simelane Street and Old Fort Road, turn Right into Old Fort Road and continue along this road through one set of robots and then the first road on your left is Playfair Road. This road will take you to the back entrance of the Elangeni Hotel, where you will find their underground parking.
