Coordinating global research for wheat Global Wheat Germplasm Conservation and Use EWG Activity report and action plan NAME OF EXPERT WORKING GROUP Global Wheat Germplasm Conservation and Use Community EWG LEADERSHIP & AUTHORSHIP Chair Vice-Chair(s) Report Authors Paula Bramel, Tom Payne, Ahmed Amri AIMS OF THE EWG The wheat conservation and use community has many members who acknowledge their role and participate in the global system to varying degrees. Some have already actively engaged in the development of the global wheat crop conservation strategies. Others have actively engaged in working or advisory groups for national or regional genetic resources systems. The proposed wheat germplasm expert working group will serve to represent and engage this global community to insure that the two roles for crop communities in the global system are being met. One is to link the genebanks together to ensure a rational, cost effective system. The second is insuring that the system operates to meet the needs of the users. Specifically, the wheat germplasm expert working group will contribute to updating the global wheat conservation strategy including various use dimensions, provide global assessments, technical advice, and recommendations for the conservation and use of genetic resources of wheat and related species to individual genebanks, the Crop Trust, and other globally important holders of the crop collection as needed. The expert working group will reach out to the global user community through its representation as well as through targeted communications and information sharing. The specific focus will be: Initiate and lead the update of the global conservation strategy Page 1 of 7

Identify and facilitate mechanisms for this crop conservation and use communities to develop as a global partnership platform with better participation of diverse stakeholders; Ensure that standardized, accurate, and useful accession level information is available through an integrated accession level information system linked to Genesys ( ) and the Global Wheat Information System ( ) to give one portal for information on wheat genetic resources Ensure greater user engagement with genebanks with more standard user feedback of data, knowledge, and use information to add global value to collections Advice genebanks on issues related to user needs such as user subsets, key acquisitions, and safety duplication; Promote international standards for genebanks, including sound systems for monitoring, quality management and staff training; Identify gaps in global collections and develop proposals to fill these gaps through exchange and collaborative collecting trips; Prioritize traits and collections for evaluation for future collaborative efforts Advice on best ways to ensure the conservation, maintenance and supply of special genetic and cytogenetic stocks; Advice on opportunities for greater collaboration between genebanks for regenerations, quality management systems, research needs, automations, rationalization, or other activities; Encourage the development of best practices for conservation and use of genetic resources and their sharing through the Crop Genebank Knowledge Base; Enhance the use of the collections, especially with greater links of genebanks to pre-breeding efforts. Alert the community of any emergency situation at a genebank, germplasm collections in danger of being lost, and advice on action needed to rescue the important material; STRATEGIC RESEARCH AGENDA CORE-THEME(S ) /TOPIC(S) COVERED BY THE EWG Cross Cutting Theme 5: Enabling technologies and shared resources, Subtopic 5.3: Genetic Resources Page 2 of 7

(2016) ACTIVITY REPORT MEETINGS HELD Face-to-Face Meetings Location Date Duration # EWG members attending Rabat, Morocco Feb 2-3, days 12 Other Meetings Type (online, etc) Date Duration # EWG members attending PROGRESS AGAINST AIMS Objectives identified for 2016 in the global EWG Action Plan Establishment of the EWG leadership and steering group Tasks/actions undertaken by the EWG Tom Payne and Paula Bramel consult with Wheat Initiative staff on way to proceed (March 2016) Election held (March 2016) Meeting Report shared with EWG and priorities agreed upon (April 2016) Videoconference with Steering Group to develop draft action plans for priorities. (May 2016) Develop operational plan with EWG that will better engage all members (June 2016) Achievements Outputs/Deliverables Comments We had consultation meeting with WI staff and agreed upon way forward but this has not been completed. Leadership and management agreed upon Elections held Steering group operating Operations plan finalized Page 3 of 7

Update the Wheat Genetic Resources conservation strategy. Develop a paper on Future challenges for conservation and use position paper by the EWG Steering Group. Information sharing and conservation of genetic stocks Gap analysis-using genotyping as a tool for existing and target for trait specific diversity. This was seen as urgent given the changes occurring in the farmer s fields. The group estimated that we only had about 10 years to fill these gaps with collections. In situ ex situ complementarity, especially for crop wild relatives. Rationalization, within collections, as collections are anticipated to increase in size. Phenotyping using new tools: Roots. Quality. CTD. Predictive Update Global Strategy with a new survey. Develop Models or scenarios for the ideal global system Draft survey developed and shared Survey tool agreed upon by EWG and shared with collection holders globally Global system model agreed upon by EWG Page 4 of 7

phenotyping via genotyping. (There is already another EWG on this topic) QMS for wheat genebanks. Upgrade funds, infrastructure, use of new technologies. How many banks? Costs of the global system? Constant need for infrastructure upgrades. Policy and IP and traceability. Additional comments/information While we have agreed upon the structure and high priority actions for the EWG, we have had difficulty moving forward. The three organizing members have not been able to move this forward. Page 5 of 7

2017 PLAN MEETINGS PLANNED Face-to-Face Meetings Location Date Duration Other Meetings Type (online, etc) Date Duration PLANNED ACTIVITIES Objectives identified for 2017 in the global EWG Action Plan (with objectives #) Tasks/actions to be undertaken by the EWG (with tasks #) Election held (March 2017) Timeline (e.g. February-March) Expected Outputs/Deliverables Meeting Report shared with EWG and priorities agreed upon (April 2017) Hold Election and establish EWG fully Videoconference with Steering Group to develop draft action plans for priorities. (May 2017) Develop operational plan with EWG that will better engage all members (June 2017) Survey finalized with EWG members Survey completed Update the Global Wheat Strategy update draft completed to Conservation Strategy be shared with EWG Page 6 of 7

Develop a paper on Future challenges for conservation and use position paper by the EWG Steering Group. Conducting a workshop by gathering all experts and develop the road-map of activities (in Tuln 2017?) To prepare a catalogue of available cytogenetic stocks, wild wheat/wild relative introgressions, and the expertise available to develop and maintain these Gap analysis-using genotyping as a tool for existing and target for trait specific diversity. This was seen as urgent given the changes occurring in the farmer s fields. The group estimated that we only had about 10 years to fill these gaps with collections. Identify authors for position paper from EWG Draft paper shared with EWG Meeting held in Tuln, 2017 Identify leadership for this effort amongst EWG members Develop proposal for the activity and for support Link EWG to gap analysis effort ongoing with the Genebank Platform for input Page 7 of 7
