Softwood lumber production A totl of 17.2 billion bord feet of softwood lumber ws produced in the Western United Sttes in 2000, nd the totl U.S. figure ws 35.9 billion bord feet (tble 1). Totl softwood lumber production in the fourth qurter of 2000 ws 8.2 billion bord feet, nd 48.8 percent of tht ws produced in the West.! Wholesle lumber prices Averge wholesle prices decresed in 2000 for ll of the selected lumber products (tble 7). Yer-end 2000 prices verged 16.4-percent decrese from yer-end 1999, cross ll five selected lumber products. Plywood Production nd Prices! Plywood production in 2000 United Sttes softwood structurl pnel bord production in 2000, t 29,370 million squre feet (3/8-inch bsis), incresed 1.2 percent from Production in the fourth qurter of 2000 ws 6.8 million bord feet, down from the third qurter volume of 7.4 (tble 1). Wholesle prices of selected plywood products decresed from 1999 to Yer-end 2000 prices verged 16.9-percent increse (tble 8) from yer-end 1999 prices. Employment in Forest Products Industries! Employment numbers for 2000 The number of persons employed in the lumber nd wood products industries decresed slightly in 2000 in Oregon nd Wshington (tble 21). Fourth qurter 2000 employment numbers were down slightly from third qurter In Oregon nd Wshington, there were 13.3 direct jobs per million bord feet of timber hrvested in 2000 (using the hrvest figures from tble 16). 1

Wshington nd Oregon log exports Log exports from Wshington nd Oregon ports totled million bord feet in 2000, s compred to million bord feet in In 2000, Wshington Customs District exported million bord feet of logs to ll countries, nd Oregon Customs District exported (tble 27).! Log export prices for Wshington nd Oregon Softwood log exports from Wshington nd Oregon ports verged $ (per thousnd bord feet) in 2000, up from the 1999 verge of $ The fourth qurter 2000 vlues for both sttes verged $ (tble 29), down from $ in the third qurter of 2000.! Pulp volumes in the Pcific Northwest The Settle, Columbi-Snke, Anchorge, nd Sn Frncisco Customs Districts showed decreses in pulp export volumes from 1999 to 2000 (tble 48).! Averge vlue of pulp exports All four customs districts showed n increse in the verge vlue for both grdes of pulp exports from 1999 to 2000 (tble 49).! Chip exports Only the Anchorge Customs District reflected n increse in the volume of chips exported in Averge vlues of chips incresed in Oregon nd Wshington, but showed decrese in the Sn Frncisco nd Anchorge Customs Districts (tble 50). 2

15 Lumber, Plywood, nd Veneer Exports! Lumber export volumes from the Northwest The lumber exports showed n increse for both Wshington nd Oregon Customs Districts from 1999 to 2000 (tble 52). The Columbi-Snke Customs District hd n increse of 0.3 percent from 1999, nd the Settle Customs District hd n increse of 10.5 percent. Northern nd Southern Cliforni lumber exports incresed (tbles 55 nd 56). Alsk decresed lumber export volumes by 75.4 percent from 1999 to 2000 (tble 57).! Averge vlue of lumber exports In the Settle nd Columbi-Snke Customs Districts, the verge vlue of lumber exports decresed from $ (per thousnd bord feet) in 1999 to $ in 2000 (tble 54). Northern Cliforni (tble 56) lumber export prices incresed from $ in 1999 to $ in Alsk lumber prices (tble 57) incresed from $ in 1999 to $ in 2000.! Oregon nd Wshington lumber imports The Settle Customs District imported 3.2 billion bord feet of lumber in 2000, mostly from Cnd (tble 70). Softwood plywood exports The 2000 softwood plywood exports were nerly the sme s in The Settle Customs District showed slight increse, nd the Columbi-Snke dropped little.
