PREFACE Due to temporary unavailability of trade data, this report was delayed. In the interest of effiieny and timeliness, all four quarters of 2002 are being published in one book. This report presents urrent information on the timber situation in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Montana, Idaho, and British Columbia, inluding data on lumber and plywood prodution and pries; timber harvest; employment in forest produts industries; international trade in logs, pulpwood, hips, lumber, and plywood; log pries in the Paifi Northwest; volume and average pries of stumpage sold by publi agenies; and other related items. Cooperation in supplying data has been reeived from the following soures: U.S. Department of Agriulture, Forest Servie, Forest Inventory and Eonomis Researh Staff in Washington, DC; Washington State Department of Natural Resoures and Employment Seurity Department; Oregon State Department of Forestry and Department of Employment; California State Department of Employment and Department of Conservation; Montana State Forester and State Employment Servie; Idaho State Department of Publi Lands and Department of Employment; Alaska State Department of Labor and Department of Natural Resoures of the Division of Lands; U.S. Department of Commere; U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Indian Affairs; British Columbia Department of Industrial Development, Trade, and Commere; and a number of private industry assoiations, firms, and individuals. The valuation definition used in the export statistis is the value at the seaport or border port of exportation. It is based on the selling prie (or ost if not sold) and inludes inland freight, insurane, and other harges to the port of exportation. Seattle Customs Distrit inludes all oastal and inland ports in the State of Washington, exept Longview and Vanouver. Columbia-Snake Customs Distrit inludes all Oregon ports and Longview and Vanouver, Washington. Anhorage Customs Distrit is the State of Alaska. San Franiso Customs Distrit inludes Monterey and all ports north of Monterey, California. The statistial data are from seondary soures and are brought together to make suh information more readily available. Soures are indiated for eah table and an be ontated diretly for means used in data olletion. Readers are autioned that unit values should not be interpreted as aurate indiators of pries. 13 Western Lumber Prodution and Pries! Softwood lumber prodution A total of 17.7 billion board feet of softwood lumber was produed in the Western United States in 2002, and the total U.S. figure was 36.0 billion board feet (table 1). Total softwood lumber prodution in the fourth quarter of 2002 was 8.5 billion board feet, and 50.0 perent of that was produed in the West.! Wholesale lumber pries Average wholesale pries dereased in 2002 for most of the seleted lumber produts (table 7). Year-end 2002 pries averaged a 2.0-perent derease from year-end 2001, aross all five seleted lumber produts. Plywood Prodution and Pries! Plywood prodution in 2002 United States softwood strutural panel board prodution in 2002, at 28,158 million square feet (3/8-inh basis), inreased 1.9 perent from Prodution in the fourth quarter of 2002 was 6.6 million board feet, down from the third quarter volume of 7.2 (table 1). Wholesale pries of seleted plywood produts dereased from 2001 to Year-end 2002 pries averaged a 3.6-perent derease (table 8) from year-end 2001 pries. Employment in Forest Produts Industries! Employment numbers for 2002 The number of persons employed in the lumber and wood produts industries dereased in 2002 in Oregon and Washington (table 21). One again, third quarter 2002 employment numbers were higher than the other quarters. In Oregon and Washington, there were 13.2 diret jobs per million board feet of timber harvested in 2002 (using the harvest figures from table 16). 1

14 Log, Pulp, and Chip Exports! Washington and Oregon log exports Log exports from Washington and Oregon ports totaled million board feet in 2002, as ompared to million board feet in In 2002, Washington Customs Distrit exported million board feet of logs to all ountries, and Oregon Customs Distrit exported (table 27).! Log export pries for Washington and Oregon Softwood log exports from Washington and Oregon ports averaged $ (per thousand board feet) in 2002, down from the 2001 average of $ The fourth quarter 2002 values for both states averaged $ (table 29), up from $ in the third quarter of 2002.! Log exports from California and Alaska San Franiso Customs Distrit exported 1,436 thousand board feet of logs in 2002, ompared with 5,766 in 2001 (table 30). The Anhorage Customs Distrit exported million board feet of logs in 2002, ompared with in 2001 (table 31).! Pulp volumes in the Paifi Northwest The Seattle, Columbia-Snake, and San Franiso Customs Distrits showed mostly inreases in pulp export volumes in 2002 (table 48). The Anhorage Customs Distrit showed a derease.! Average value of pulp exports Most of the ustoms distrits showed a derease in the average value for both grades of pulp exports from 2001 to 2002 (table 49).! Chip exports Three of the ustoms distrits refleted a derease in the volume of hips exported in 2002; only Columbia-Snake showed an inrease. The average values of hips dereased in all but the Anhorage Customs Distrit (table 50). 2

15 Lumber, Plywood, and Veneer Exports! Lumber export volumes from the Northwest The lumber exports showed a substantial derease for both Washington and Oregon Customs Distrits from 2001 to 2002 (table 52). The Columbia-Snake Customs Distrit had a derease of 38.2 perent from 2001, and the Seattle Customs Distrit had a derease of 10.1 perent. Northern and Southern California lumber exports inreased (tables 55 and 56). Alaska dereased lumber export volumes by 97.4 perent from 2001 to 2002 (table 57).! Average value of lumber exports In the Seattle and Columbia-Snake Customs Distrits, the average value of lumber exports dereased from $ (per thousand board feet) in 2001 to $ in 2002 (table 54). Northern California (table 56) lumber export pries dereased from $ in 2001 to $ in Alaska lumber pries (table 57) dereased from $ in 2001 to $49.56 in 2002.! Oregon and Washington lumber imports The Seattle Customs Distrit imported 3.6 billion board feet of lumber in 2002, mostly from Canada (table 70). The Columbia- Snake Customs Distrit imported million board feet in 2002, ompared with million in 2001 (table 72).! Softwood plywood exports The 2002 softwood plywood exports mostly dereased from Many of the average values dereased in 2002 (table 74).! Softwood veneer exports In 2002, softwood veneer export volumes in Washington and Oregon dropped signifiantly (table 76). The softwood veneer export values showed an inrease, but the hardwood veneer pries dereased in

Sold volume in Northern Region Not all ownership numbers are available, but the amount of timber sold on National Forest lands in Montana and northern Idaho dereased 32.3 perent from 2001 to 2002 (table 77).! Sold volume in northern California In 2002, the volume of timber sold on USDA Forest Servie lands in northern California dereased 14.5 perent from the 2001 total (table 85).! Sold volume in Washington and Oregon Oregon and Washington showed an inrease of 25.7 perent in the amount of timber sold on USDA Forest Servie lands from 2001 to 2002 (table 91).! Sold volume in Alaska In 2002, the volume of timber sold on National Forest lands in Alaska was 23.7 million board feet, ompared to 52.8 million board feet in 2001 (table 97). Average values inreased from $34.70 in 2001 to $41.65 in 2002 (table 98). 4
