1 Leading International Trade Fair DÜSSELDORF, GERMANY NOVEMBER Member of INDUSTRY DAY AND TALENT EXCHANGE Thursday, 15 November 2018

2 INNOVATIVE COMPANIES MEET YOUNG SCIENTISTS After the extremely successful launch in 2017, the MEDICA LABMED FORUM this year offers an innovative format on the last day of the trade fair (Thursday, 15 November 2018) which is aimed not only at exhibitors and trade fair visitors, but also at a broad audience from academia and industry. With short presentations and a panel discussion, the INDUSTRY DAY AND TALENT EXCHANGE event appeals in particular to young, innovative-minded people and companies. According to the motto of INNOVATIVE COMPANIES MEET YOUNG SCIENTISTS, it offers a platform which is open to both sides for sharing knowledge, advertising career opportunities, and working to combat the shortage of young people in the technical disciplines of medicine. We would like to thank the associations VDGH e.v. (industry) and DGKL e.v. (academia) for their patronage and are delighted that the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD e. V. will enrich the event with young international speakers. Entry is free for trade fair visitors. The conference language is English. Welcome by DGKL e. V. Dr. Ronald Biemann, from the University Hospital of Magdeburg, Chairman of the DGKL e. V. Young Laboratory Section Owing to increasing life expectancies and technological progress, the demand for medical laboratory services will continue to increase in the future. Here, the demand for academic professionals exceeds the supply of graduate students by far. That s why the Young Laboratory Section of the German Association for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (DGKL e.v.) focuses in particular on potential trainees in these fields i.e. on prospective medical specialists and scientists who are interested in training as clinical chemists. Against this backdrop, we are delighted to sponsor and be actively involved in the LABMED FORUM at MEDICA, because the new INNOVATIVE COMPANIES MEET YOUNG SCIENTISTS format is perfect for making the attractiveness and excellent professional prospects of in-vitro diagnostics accessible to a broad audience. Laboratory medicine is a key interface which brings together a wide variety of medical fields such as endocrinology, haematology, transfusion medicine, immunology, molecular genetics, and medical informatics, for example. The scientific and technical make-up paves the way for an exciting working environment through the application of innovative methods in in-vitro diagnostics. Prof. Dr. Stefan Holdenrieder (Chairman) Prof. Dr. Georg Hoffmann (Organiser) Deutsches Herzzentrum München Trillium GmbH Med. Fachverlag Phone: georg.hoffmann@trillium.de At the same time, the working time can frequently be adjusted to suit the actual life situation. It is almost always possible for people to pursue their own research projects here. An important instrument for the Young Laboratory Section is bringing prospective laboratory medicine specialists and clinical chemists in contact with experienced colleagues and attractive employers in academia and industry. We will be delighted if the LABMED FORUM is able to make a lasting contribution to this.

3 Welcome by VDGH e.v. Dr. Martin Walger, Managing Director of the German Diagnostics Industry Association (VDGH e. V.), Chairman of the DGKL e. V. Young Laboratory Section Welcome by the German Academic Exchange Service Kitimapron Padpronpradit, Development Cooperation: Partnership Programmes, Alumni Projects, and Higher Education Management P32 German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) The German Diagnostics Industry Association (VDGH) very much welcomes the establishment of a separate information day for young scientists in medicine and life sciences at the MEDICA LABMED FORUM. Here, academia and industry meet to share knowledge about career opportunities which are often not known about in university institutions. The member companies in the Life Science Research (LSR) department at VDGH develop and produce instruments, reagents, and consumables for use in basic and applied research, for example high sensitivity detection systems, biomolecular research reagents, Smart Consumables, chip technologies, and detectors. Customers include the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, as well as biotechnology. Diagnostics manufacturers develop and produce reagents, test kits, and devices, so-called in-vitro diagnostics, for registered doctors practices, hospitals, and around-the-clock laboratories. The LABMED FORUM at MEDICA is the ideal space for putting scientists from developing countries in touch with the economy and applied research. Here, prospective in-vitro diagnostics and life sciences specialists learn about methodological progress and future scientific issues in a highly attractive field of medicine. For the Alumni of the German Academic Exchange Service who are employed in the field of medical technology, the forum offers the opportunity to present their career and to discuss their research results with interested parties. The speakers from various developing countries hope for a diverse audience and personal connections which demonstrate what medical technology training does for medicine as a whole, and in particular what high-quality training in Germany has contributed to it. Biologists, chemists, engineers and medical professionals are urgently required in the companies so that these products can successfully find their way to market and the highly specialised clients in the two industries receive a service which meets their scientific level. That s why the companies in VDGH get involved in their action days for prospective specialists in the LSR and in-vitro diagnostics industry side by side with German universities. We are delighted that the LABMED FORUM at MEDICA offers another platform for information exchange between young scientists and innovative companies.
