Bioremediation in Florida Overview of Bio Implementation Florida DEP Hazardous Waste Cleanup Section Drycleaning Solvent Cleanup Program Tallahassee, FL. (850)

Overview Bioremediation, why it works in FL Amendments Used Application When to Start & When to Stop Lessons Learned/ Challenges Molasses Injection

Groundwater Remedies Implemented

Amendments 19 Total Potassium Lactate Ethyl Lactate HRC HRC-x HRC - Advanced EOS AquaBupH B12 Supplement HRC

Amendments Chito-Rem Molasses ABC- Anaerobic BioChem PHOSter isoc- Submerged Oxygen Curtain ORC Ethanol Chito - Rem

Amendments BioAugmentation: KB1 BDI-Bio-Dechlor INOCULUM RTB-1 Anarobic Biochem Cl-OUT Buffers: KOH (K- Lactate) Planned EHC Adventus Anhydrous potassium carbonate (K-Lactate) Ammonium bicarbonate & magnesium hydroxide (EOS)

Biological Amendments

Amendment use by Year

Combination Beaches K-lactate, & denatured alcohol Sta Bright - K-lactate, yeast extract, dibasic K-phosphate, & ammonium bicorbonate McNatt s EOS, sodium thiosulfate (reducing agent) B12 (cyanocoblamin) When mixing amendments Recommend using gw from on site well Macronutrients nitrogen (ammonia), phosphorous (orthophosphate) If necessary - native DHE Carbon: Nitrogen: Phosphorous ratio 100:25:1

Delivery Methods 34 Injection wells 9 DPT 8 Recirculation 4 Excavation 3 Storm drain 1 Sparge Wells 2 SVE laterals 1 SVE borehole

Delivery Methods IW, DPT, & Recirc Soluble Injections: continuous or monthly Injection Wells (34 sites) Recirculation System (8 sites) k-lactate (4) Ethyl lactate (3) Ethanol (1) Injection wells - may have biofouling Dpt higher chance of daylighting Slow Release Injections: annually or single event Direct push (9 sites) HRC (5) ORC (1) ABC (1) EOS (1) K- Lactate (1)

Recirculation System

Injection and SVE Well Locations Treatment System

SVE Borehole Chito-Rem

Evolving Injection Plan June days to complete 175 points, 22,000 lbs of HRC TM April days to complete 52 points, 3,000 lbs of HRC TM

May and 28 points HRC X August 2005 EXCAVATION & EOS 133 tons, 8 injection points HRC HRC-X BDI Excavation Passive Venting EOS B12 ph adjustment

Bio Augmentation Conducted Dehalococcoides (DHE) testing on 19 Sites Sites - DHE detected 9 Sites - Split samples between two labs 6 of the 9 sites had different results Do you test? Not used as a Pre Screening Tool Fl has bio-augmented (DHE) at 3 sites Dehalococcoides

KB-1 8 Liters stainless steel N 2 pressurized Injected via pressure displacement

When to introduce ISB Following Soil Remediation Install SVE or venting system prior to injection Deals with methane/odors by biological activity Characterization of source area As a polishing technology? Only within source area Dissolved phase only? Not Necessarily FL has closed 4 sites with bio. All considered polishing

When to stop? Reasonable endpoints? CTLs (3 ug/l PCE) Site Specific Goals (Natural Attenuation Default 300 ug/l) Mass Reduction (no PCE, TCE only daughters products) Containment - Stable plume, no migration

Barrier Configuration 35 Injection Well Pairs 25 Injection well Pairs

Performance Monitoring Wells - Never enough & Not in the right place Baseline Sampling - look at the data and adjust accordingly Monitoring frequency - based on longevity of amendment Post Injection Monitoring TOC, TDS, ph, & Conductivity good indicators & low cost Comprehensive first event Followed by limited analysis of key parameters only

Challenges in Florida DNAPL Low or High ph Low Hydraulic Conductivity Access to source area Proximity to sensitive receptors

Access to source areas

Lessons Learned Access and Distribution are Challenges but there are ways to address them Recirculation System - greater distribution Slow Release Amendments - One time event (under bldg) How Much? In general FL has moved from: High Concentration & Low Volume Injections to Low Concentration & Larger Volumes - greater distribution. Good Luck - Distribution of Buffering agent can be difficult
