13 The Mater Aseptic Compounding Unit (ACU) The National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) was established in 2007 by the Irish Government to ensure that all elements of cancer policy are delivered to the maximum possible extent. The Mater Hospital is part of the NCCOP and is a Centre of Excellence for the treatment and preparation of Cytotoxic Drugs therapeutic agents for the treatment of cancer Cytotoxic drugs are among the most highly sophisticated and sensitive drugs to handle and produce. The Mater Hospital manufacture all Cytotoxics drugs both for in-patients and out-patients

14 The Mater Aseptic Compounding Unit (ACU) Each drug is individualised and tailored to a patient's need Process of production (known as sterile compounding) is laborious and staff intensive Each drug is prepared in sterile conditions utilising Isolator technology within Clean rooms This combination of conditions allows the operator to be segregated from the drug Such barrier technology enables longer microbiological stability of the final product and protects the operator from the hazardous nature of these drugs during their manipulation
