6 What is it? Describes how the UNECE region s forest sector could contribute to the development of a green economy. Promotes the sharing and implementa%on of best prac%ces concerning the green economy. Promotes the development and implementa%on of policies for the forest sector which are effec%ve in achieving stated objec%ves, efficient in the use of resources and equitable in their treatment of all actors, both inside and outside the sector. Communicates the poten%al of the UNECE region s forest sector to policy makers, the general public and decision makers in other sectors. Not a binding commitment 6

10 Bioeconomy s significance in Finland Turnover 64bn Finland seeks to increase its bioeconomy output to 100bn euros by 2025 and to create 100,000 new jobs in the process. Share of employment 11% Bioeconomy combines wood processing, chemistry, energy, construction, technology, food and health. Share of exports 26% Forest sector is the backbone of bioeconomy in Finland Forest cover > 70 %

14 Reflections Rovaniemi Action Plan: was designed in a wide voluntary based participatory process engaging over 100 parties including governments, stakeholders, organisations links national regional global -> cooperation The both strategies described here: are based on sustainable forest management link forests to broader society and its processes facilitate the transformation of the sector address the value chain, products and services communicate both within and outside traditional forest sector Challenges for forest governance, information and, maintenance and enhancement of ecosystem services 14
