MINUTES for the Meeting of the Working Party on Mixing Held on the occasion of CHISA 2016 Clarion Hotel, Prague, Czech Republic Date: Tuesday August 30, 2016 Time: 2pm Attendees Ville Alopeus (VA), Joelle Aubin (JA), Jerzy Baldyga (JB), Ivan Fort (IF), Alain Liné (AL), José Carlos Lopes (JCL), Giusi Montante (GM), Joachim Ritter (JR) (by phone), Martine Poux (MP). Apologies Rufat Abiev, Gul Ozcan Taskin, Andrea Ducci, Pavel Ditl, Serafim Vlaev, Alberto Brucato, Alvin Nienow, Tomas Jirout. Minutes taken by J. Aubin.

1. General information (Jerzy Baldyga JB) World Congress of Chemical Engineering, Barcelona Spain, 1-5 October, 2017 Website: The congress is organised by 7 main topics: Topic 2 Unit Operations & Separation Processes comprises five subtopics: Thermodynamics & Transport Phenomena, combined with JE-IUT Heat & Mass Transfer Separation Processes Particulate Solids, Integrated in PARMAT Mixing, Integrated in PARMAT2017 Mixing is a subtopic integrated in PARMAT (International Conference on Processing, Handling and Characterization of Particulate Materials), which is a new conference on particulate materials. PARMAT is organised by eight working parties of the EFCE and has many other topics, including: Agglomeration, de-agglomeration and dispersion Crystallization and precipitation Comminution and classification Mixing Multiphase Fluid Flow Fluidization Characterization and simulation of particles and particulate systems Mechanics of particulate solids

Bulk materials handling developments Biohazards and nano-safety Industrial safety & occupational health Lessons learned from accidents Other research in connection with the creation, processing, handling and characterization of particulate materials in industry. MP is worried that the organisers of PARMAT have understood that mixing can be without solids. However, JB assures her that they have agreed that mixing with and without solids will be included. Changes can still be made with this organisation if anyone has further suggestions. Collaborations A brief update on collaborations was given. A H2020 proposal for an International Training Network (ITN Marie Curie) between several members has been submitted twice (2015 and 2016) but has not yet succeeded. The proposal called MIXCRE has been coordinated by the University of Porto and involves the Politechico di Torino, Warsaw University of Technology, Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse, University of Birmingham, University of Manchester, as well as several industrial partners. JB reminded members that they should promote collaboration whenever possible. 2. Reports of mixing activities in member countries France: Mixing activities are now in the Reactors & Intensification national working party so the topics of seminars varies. A 1-day seminar on Reactive Separation was organised in June. The next 1-day seminar will be on mixing and will be held early Italy: No specific event was organised this year but the Biotech and Multiphase flow conference was organised with mixing paper. Exchange of students intra-italy, but also with UK (UCL, Dr. A. Ducci) and Czech Republic (UCT Praha, Prof. T. Moucha). Funding through ERASMUS or universities. Czech Republic: Organisation of CHISA 2016 with two half-day mixing sessions. Portugal: The University of Porto is the only group working on mixing in Portugal so no national activities as so. JCL explains that his involvement with the WP Mixing has been a very good thing for him and has provided some very good opportunities for projects. In addition to some industrial collaborations, he is also collaborating with A. Liné on POD analysis. Finland: No national projects or conferences specifically on mixing so nothing to report. Germany: Annual report provided by Joachim Ritter (JR) Appendix 1.

Poland: National Conference: XXII Chemical and Process Engineering Conference (Polish), Lodz-Spala, 5-9 September 2016, Mixing: 12 lectures including one keynote and 9 posters 3. Up-coming events ISMIP IX, June 2017, Birmingham, UK Co-chairs: Prof. Mark Simmons, Dr. Gul Ozcan-Taskin Congress web page: Call for abstracts now open, until 15 th November 2016 Topics o Mixing of fluids with complex rheology - single or multiphase fluids from dilute suspensions to slurries, formulated liquid products o Mixing for manufacturability from laboratory to process scale in batch and continuous processes o Mixing within biological processes effects of local conditions on cells and bioreactor performance o Mixing in microfluidic systems chemical and bio-processing driven by microscale mixing o Simulations different computational techniques used for mixing processes such as CFD, DEM, FEM etc. WCCE10, 1-5 October 2017, Barcelona, Spain Website: Abstract submission opening in September 2016, deadline 30 th January Mixing topics as discussed above in first point. NAMF XXVI, June 2018, Porto Rico Organiser: Luis Sierra (Merck) European Conference on Mixing (ECoM), September 2018, Toulouse France Organising committee: Joelle Aubin, Alain Liné, Jérôme Morchain, Martine Poux First committee meeting in July. Organisers are currently looking for the venue, which will be in Toulouse city center. 3. AOB Awards committee (GM) R. Gleiser is no longer in the working party (Joachim Ritter is now the delegate for Germany) so he will need to be replaced in the awards committee. He was the only industrial member. GM is wondering if BHRG will still fund the Lifetime award, since there is no track in the past records about the term of the support. In addition, now that G. Ozcan-Taskin

is no longer working for BHRG, it would be useful to have a new contact in BHRG for queries/arrangements. Also, it may be that the EFCE will no longer sponsor the junior Excellence award. This will need to be clarified when the minutes of the EFCE meeting held on 27/08/16 are sent out. If this is confirmed, a sponsor for the junior award will need to be found. JA suggested that it perhaps the sponsors of the prizes could be invited to take part of the awards committee. All of these points will need to be attended to in the first half of 2017 in order to prepare the award procedure for Terms of office (JB) JB points out the terms of office for the chairmen and secretary of the working party: 4 years, renewable once. JB has been in chairman since 2012; JA has been secretary since The small number of members at the meeting made it difficult to discuss this point. JB suggested that no changes are made until the meeting in Date/venue for next WP Mixing meeting in 2017 There are two possible venues for the WP Mixing meeting in 2017: ISMIP in Birmingham in June or WCCE10 in Barcelona in October. The small number of members at the meeting made it difficult to conclude on this point. It was therefore decided that a vote by (or doodle) will be conducted such that the greatest number of people can attend.
