19 Recognitions 2012 Nature BGI was established in 1999 to support the Human Genome Project. It went from accounting for about 1% of the genomics community s sequencing capacity at that time, to more like 50% today, says George Church, a geneticist at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. BGI-Shenzhen has emerged as a genomics superpower. Since its inception in 1999, BGI has focused on developing its sequencing and bioinformatics capabilities while turning to outside teams in crop science, human disease, and microbiology to help define its research objectives. As a result, BGI has become the go-to organization for groups in need of sequencing Science: China's Sequencing Powerhouse Comes of Age 2014 New Yorker: The Gene Factory As the world s scientists focus with increasing intensity on transforming the genetic codes of every living creature into information that can be used to treat and ultimately prevent disease, Shenzhen is home to a different kind of factory: B.G.I., the world s largest genetic-research center...b.g.i. produces at least a quarter of the world s genomic data more than Harvard University, the National Institutes of Health, or any other scientific institution. I m impressed by the achievements BGI made in genetic sequencing, genomics and bioinformatics since its founding I knew a lot of people who dropped out of the university and did technical and business work. But it s my first time to see, in BGI, people dropped out of the university to do basic research and could achieve remarkable success Bill Gates 2013 Boao Forum for Asia Dialogue with Bill Gates: Investment for the poor There are so many examples of great innovative works have been done here. One becoming a partner of our Foundation recently is BGI, the biotechnology institute headquartered in Shenzhen. It s very interesting how they ve gone after very young people and talented people, reminds me of the early days of Microsoft - the great energy, the minds thinking in the new ways all committed to solve the top problems in science.
