1 International Symposium Life at the Interface Centenary of the Institute of Pathology in Mainz ( ) & Retrospective of the Chair of Pathology ( ) [Univ.-Prof. C. James Kirkpatrick, MD, PhD, DSc, FRCPath] May, 2015 Main Lecture Hall in the Clinic of Surgery (Building 505) University Medical Centre of the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz 1

2 Andreas Felger, Hic gaudet mors succurrere vitae, ( here death is pleased to serve life ) Wooden relief in the entrance hall of the Institute of Pathology (since 1989) Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning. (Albert Einstein) Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Colleagues, We are delighted to celebrate with you 100 years of Pathology in Mainz. This period is characterized by many changes, not just at the level of the institute s buildings, but of course at the level of personalities as well as the specialities in the diagnostic service, not to mention the areas of research. However, two aims were absolutely stable during that long time to offer the best diagnostic service for patient care and to initiate innovative research. Examples of the latter are connective tissue pathology, paediatric pathology and renal pathology, which are all closely related with pathologists from the institute in Mainz. The approach taken to succeed in research activity also followed a strategic direction during that time, namely that to learn best from pathological conditions, modern methods should be available. Thus, over the years the institute in Mainz accommodated three generations of electron microscopes, established early automated immunohistology, a comprehensive molecular pathology unit and recently a fully automated robotic-based tissue bio-bank. Over the past two decades the REPAIR-lab was established as an experimental facility to study biomaterial-based regeneration, including nanomedicine. In the early days of pathology in Mainz learning from disease was greatly assisted by high autopsy activity. With time, the aim and practice of pathology has changed dramatically. Nowadays, pathological services are essential to help optimize therapeutic regimens, making pathology an integral part of so-called personalized medicine. In the future, recognition of early pathological conditions as well as individual molecular parameters will increase in importance. In addition, pathology has an essential role in regenerative medicine, which aims at stimulating healing processes in the various organs and tissues. As in the past, pathology must make its contribution to understanding of the mechanisms underlying defective repair, and discovery of new pathways for tissue regeneration. The latter is a principal research focus of the institute, and therefore we are happy to have internationally recognized scientists from this field for the first day of the symposium. Since cell and tissue banking is a crucial issue not only in pathology research but also in regenerative medicine the second day of the symposium is dedicated to that theme, which will also be presented by a group of leading international scientists. We hope that you will find inspiring moments at the symposium, and we thank all of our speakers and the institutions which supported this meeting! Univ.-Prof. C.J.
