5 Introduction Review of previous published research prevents wasteful duplication of effort and can suggest research topics, questions and methods In 2014, there were 28k journals publishing: 2.5 milion articles/year Growing 3.5% per year

11 Journal ranking Impact factor The impact factor (IF) of an academic journal is a measure reflecting the yearly average number of citations to recent articles published in that journal. It is frequently used as a proxy for the relative importance of a journal within its field

12 Medical Physics category

13 Normalized Impact Factor Quartile1 : Impact Factor norm = 6 Quartile2 : Impact Factor norm = 4 Quartile3 : Impact Factor norm = 2 Quartile4 : Impact Factor norm = 1 Se IF rivista è nel range 7-12: Impact Factor norm = 8 Se IF rivista è nel range 12-15: Impact Factor norm = 10 Se IF rivista è nel >15: Impact Factor norm = 15 Se rivista non impattata: Impact Factor norm = 0.1

23 How to select the references 1. Mandatory: reference any materials, ideas, information used in your paper including own previous work 2. Common knowledge does not need being references 3. (usually) Only papers with a Data Object Identifier (DOI) is allowed 4. Citation style as requested by the journal Vancouver: numerical order (as references appear in the text) Harvard: alphabetical order Courtesy of prof. Nuesslin

24 Organize the references 1. Organize the material considered to be cited in the beginning of writing the paper 2. Rank the most important papers to be cited (some journals limit the number of citations) 3. Review articles or most recent papers may reduce the number of citations 4. Refer to previous works to introduce the reader in the field of your topic 5. Reference to prior publications may shorten the paper, particulary the introduction and methods sections

25 Organize the references: Tips 1. Check carefully references 2. Read and verify original papers cosidered to be cited 3. Does the cited paper include the information you are refering to? 4. Is the reference placed correctly in the text? 5. Is the order, spelling, journal name, correctly given in the reference list? 6. Avoid personal communication and unpublished material 7. No references in the abstract
