3 Partnership - State University of New York and the University of the West Indies SUNY-UWI Center for Leadership and Sustainable Development Research relevant to democratic participation, leadership, and governance Focus on solutions to specific problems constraining the achievement of the United Nation s Sustainable Development Goals Focus on serving groups that have faced barriers to equal opportunities. Address health research capacity building and current public health challenges SUNY Global Health Institute: Develop joint task force with the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Mona Campus in Kingston, Jamaica. Initial collaboration would result in: Needs assessment for a 5-year program development plan Facilitate system-to-system partnerships Foster collaboration while promoting graduate and undergraduate student education, research and service opportunities Cultural exchange

4 Methods A needs assessment identified research and education priorities Dual system linkage structure was created to promote health and wellness. Scientific working groups were established to identify high priority areas and clinical research infrastructure Partnerships facilitated using HUBzero an open-source software platform with project-specific faculty and staff assigned to each development group.

6 Results Joint Grant Applications NIH Fogarty International Center Global Infectious Diseases Research Training Program application (x3) Investigator-initiated applications to industry Two submitted (viral hepatitis, cannabinoids in diabetes); ongoing revisions Traditional medicine and pharmaceutical innovation (in progress)

8 Laboratory Sciences and Information Technology Infrastructure Two key components Status of laboratory sciences Capacity for robust data management, storage, analytics, reporting Laboratory sciences component is multifaceted Education and training for laboratory scientists and technologists Assure that research is completed at the highest level of quality Identify the types of instrumentation and analytics software needed. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Data management is linked to the laboratory sciences component All laboratory instrumentation now utilizes complex software Analyzing the output from a laboratory research test. Require integration with: Electronic health records Laboratory data management systems Statistical software platforms.

11 UB Center for Integrated Global Biomedical Sciences: Mentoring Young Investigators An international hub for innovation that brings together scientific disciplines in a nontraditional approach to build capacity and address global challenges. Education, training and research promote discovery, maximize technology transfer and foster translation. Works with international partners to address global health challenges and recognize important connections between health and sustainable economic development.

12 Summary Innovative technology platforms to promote shared project development A novel alternative to the traditional model that requires travel and prolonged visits at distant training sites. Framework established enabling joint Health Research Faculty Task Force to begin implementation of high-impact health research Foundation for achieving SDGs, drive timelines and milestones. Education and research programs to be funded through competitive research grants and contracts Data analytics for outcomes analysis, geographic tracking, budget forecasting to achieve the SDGs.

13 Conclusions Global Biomedical Research - Stimulus for new models of faculty interaction Clinical Pharmacology and Drug Development : a common thread Partnerships for LMIC capacity building - Novel approaches to accelerate progress Leveraging existing programs to enable UWI and SUNY progress Workforce Development: Centers of Excellence, STEM planning, business development North-South and South-South research collaboration and mentoring models Linkage to Sustainable Development Goals to bridge LMIC capacity building and science-policy perspectives Research and development facilities need to be included in considering infrastructure needs
