4 Forestry in Finland % of the land is covered by forests - 60% of the productive forest is family owned - % of publically vs privately owned forest varies depending on the region - The multitude of forest owners means that there is also a multitude of ideas of what should be done with the forest (good quality logs, crown and stems for energy, hunting licences, berry picking tours, organic cerfication, etc.) multitude of opportunities for innovation and sustainability! 4

5 How can we help such a sector grow and innovate? How can we ensure that it is done in a sustainable way? Look at what networks companies and other actors form (nodes), establish what kinds of connections there are among them, pin point what kinds of actors are not yet part of the networks under study and what new links can be formed, qualify and quantify the impacts of the links and consider the three pillars as early as possible. 5

10 Concluding points Good data availability for environmental issues and economic aspects High regional differences in social impacts that appear relevant, even at the level of a single country and a small population (5.5mil) High acceptance innovative products on the local market and new chemicals and materials are being tested all the time from traditional raw materials New companies for ecoservices are common currently, no sound approach has been used to ensure that they contribute to a responsible use of natural resources (and provide useful social assets) 10
