10 Proposed actions for Monitoring of Ebola Vaccine Impact & Safety In order to closely monitor the impact of Ebola Vaccine using existing surveillance structures, the below tasks will be carried out: Develop standardize monitoring guide/tools inclusive of AEFI monitoring for EVD vaccine Use existing structure to follow-up vaccinee(s) receiving the Ebola vaccine through the below: o Establishment of a detail data base for all those on the Ebola vaccine; o Mobile Phone Daily phone call to vaccinee(s) on the Ebola vaccine; o Visitation Bi-weekly visitation by general community health volunteers (gchvs) to assess vaccinee(s) health status in relation to the Ebola vaccine using standardized assessment tool.

11 Social Mobilization and Communication Engagement EVD transmission provoked high and large scale spreading of rumors that transformed from time to time KAP Survey showed: high awareness about the existence of the disease low knowledge on mode of transmission Which led to the perception that any injectable vaccines were vehicle for EVD transmission Hence, individual or community hesitancy and refusal against vaccination especially EVD vaccination is very critical Distrust in the health system worsened with the emergence of EVD in the country

12 POTENTIAL CHALLENGES Skepticism and Misconception about new EVD vaccine Individual or Block / Community resistance and refusal toward vaccination services. Poor coordination between PREVAIL and MOH Lack of cold chain capacity for Ebola vaccine storage Capacity building o Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) MISCONCEPTIONS/RUMOR ABOUT ROUTINE VACCINES & EVD TRIAL VACCINE Ebola is gone but government is using it to get rich New ETUs empty, the Government is looking for people to fill them. Ebola virus injected into vaccines to infect children vaccine is intended to increase the death toll among children since Ebola is now finished Health workers are the ones manufacturing Ebola Ebola will spread among students when school open

13 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MITIGATION MoH and other key partners to hold consultative meeting with PREVAIL to improve the coordination; Intensify community engagement: Construction of cold store facility; and Capacity building Rumor tracking and prompt modifications in messaging will play an important role U Reporting to be used proactively Continued involvement of community, religious and traditional leaders and Chiefs is critical in transforming the perceptions of the people An informed implementation and communities involvement in decision making existing social mobilization network will be highly useful Continue usage of FM and local radio stations is strategic in reaching out to the communities Continuum of care in an affordable manner is critical for regaining community confidence in health systems
