The new way to control the balance between self-polishing and leaching ultra-effective antifouling using nanocapsule technology

NCT A wave of improvement Marine fouling a thing of the past GLOBIC NCT is the most recent, patented Hempel antifouling solution, designed to combat marine fouling and the effects that marine organisms have on hull roughness and fuel consumption. Furthermore, the interaction between the core and the shell of the nanocapsules ensures a controlled balance between the self-polishing rate and the leach rate. This results in exceptional fouling prevention performance, combined with efficient self-smoothing. GLOBIC NCT achieves this with a high-performance antifouling that is both self-polishing and self-smoothing, based on the groundbreaking use of nanocapsule technology. The key to this excellent performance is a revolution in the polymeric binder. For the first time ever in the field of antifoulings, Hempel has now introduced the use of nanocapsule technology (NCT) as a way to ensure consistent, well-controlled fouling prevention under even the most demanding operating conditions. With GLOBIC NCT, problems with marine fouling are now a thing of the past. Introducing nanocapsule technology The binder system used in GLOBIC NCT antifouling features nano-size acrylate capsules that make the coating extremely homogenous. GLOBIC NCT builds on the exceptional mechanical strength already well known from previous versions of GLOBIC antifouling, exploiting the Hempel patent on the use of fibres in antifouling coatings. Economical path to top performance Nanocapsule technology provides such precise control of polishing rates that users can now specify a top-performance product at economical cost, with unusually low dry-film thicknesses even for extended service periods of as much as 60 months. 3

GLOBIC NCT uses a patented nanocapsule delivery system to release specially designed antifouling agents in a carefully controlled flow. The combination of the core and shell of these nanocapsules ensures a controlled balance between self-polishing and leaching. This results in exceptional fouling prevention, combined with efficient self-smoothing. GLOBIC NCT provides a wave of improvement in what can be achieved with modern antifouling technology, so that you benefit from a wave of advantages. NCT

GLOBIC NCT Ride the technology wave A question of balance Any successful self-polishing antifouling coating must feature the best possible balance between the self-polishing rate and the rate at which the antifouling agents leach out. It is only by maintaining this key ratio that the owner or operator can achieve cost-effective long-term protection under all service conditions. The special nanocapsules used in GLOBIC NCT antifouling feature a core that consists of a highly reactive acrylate. This is the binder component that is primarily responsible sible for the self-polishing effect in the coating. This reactive core is protected by a shell of hydrophobic acrylate polymer that controls the rate at which sea water penetrates to the core. Hempel GLOBIC NCT features a unique, fully documented capacity to keep self-polishing rates constant during the entire service life of the coating, while at the same time only developing a thin layer of leached binder matrix. The ideal combination The primary binder used in GLOBIC NCT consists of nanocapsules made of acrylate. This binder component is responsible for the improved control of polishing and leaching that GLOBIC NCT makes possible. The antifouling agents in GLOBIC NCT are cuprous oxide and other co-biocides designed to jointly provide a highly efficient antifouling effect. Working in collaboration with research partners in Japan, Hempel research labs demonstrated that it is technically possible to fine-tune the rate at which the acrylate core reacts with sea water. This capability is a prerequisite for formulating antifouling coatings that feature polishing rates designed for specific purposes and conditions. Besides protecting the reactive core, the polymer shell has outstanding capabilities in providing controlled release of the powerful antifouling agents. This results in a thin but highly stable leached layer that ensures the constant, controlled release of compounds that act on any fouling present right at the surface of the coating and continue to do so throughout the coating s service life. It is the balance between the action of the specific binder and antifouling agents that ensures effective fouling prevention during the entire service life of the GLOBIC NCT coating. Shell and core The constant Hempel focus on new and improved binder technologies has resulted in a highly advanced binder system based on patented nanocapsule acrylate technology. 7 GLOBIC applied for another 60 months service period Microfibre-reinforced GLOBIC NCT Fibre-reinforced GLOBIC NCT also benefits greatly from mechanical reinforcement on the basis of patented Hempel microfibre technology. By combining this with the novel use of a nanocapsule delivery system, it has been possible to develop both the cohesion and the adhesion properties of this antifouling coating to perfection. Microfibre technology The strength of fibre-reinforced materials is widely appreciated throughout industry. Hempel patented the use of microfibres in antifouling coatings in the 1990s and has since exploited the technology still further to provide important additional benefits. The combination of the advanced-technology binder in GLOBIC NCT and the use of microfibres results in excellent mechanical properties. Impact resistance tests corresponding to the toughest fender contacts have clearly demonstrated that GLOBIC NCT with microfibres provides more rapid hardening and also results in improved cohesive strength. How GLOBIC NCT works 7

GLOBIC NCT combats marine fouling even more effectively than ever before, using a nanocapsule delivery system to release the antifouling agents in a meticulously controlled flow. Maintaining this key ratio between self-polishing and leaching means cost-effective long-term protection under all service conditions. A controlled balance between these factors paves the way to new levels of performance, with lower drag, excellent self-smoothing and better fuel efficiency. NCT

Benefit from better performance With a wave of advantages 9

GLOBIC NCT Perfect balance between polishing and leaching Performance result after extended service time Benefit from better performance GLOBIC NCT is a self-polishing antifouling that ensures improved drag reduction and excellent self-smoothing. This breakthrough coating provides owners and operators with cost/performance benefits similar to those available with the types of TBT-based antifoulings previously used. GLOBIC NCT also benefits strongly from performance results garnered from the more than 6,000 vessels coated with microfibre-based Hempel antifoulings to date. Overcoating The thin leached layer and the mechanical strength of GLOBIC NCT make it possible to undertake repeated recoating with no need for a tie coat. GLOBIC NCT can also overcoat antifoulings based on other technologies, including the Hempel OCEANIC and OLYMPIC ranges. In the vast majority of cases, it is even possible to use GLOBIC NCT on top of antifoulings from other suppliers, with no tie coat needed. GLOBIC NCT is compatible with virtually all other antifouling technologies. Service life Performance results gathered from more than 6 years of intensive Hempel testing and development work have clearly demonstrated that nanocapsule technology is able to provide meticulously controlled dosing of the required amount of antifouling agent, at a release rate that exactly matches the specified service profile. Hempel s groundbreaking use of nanocapsule technology therefore means that the fouling prevention potential of GLOBIC NCT solutions is second to none. General performance and fouling prevention in particular is consistently high, right from launch until a drydocking after as much as 60 months of demanding operation. Two distinct opportunities GLOBIC NCT is available in two distinct product ranges, with identical performance profiles once the vessel has been launched. However, the GLOBIC NCT products for newbuildings have been specially developed to take into consideration shipyards practical requirements regarding workability and smooth production flow. The GLOBIC NCT range is shown in the table below. A highpolishing product is specified for vessels with service profiles characterised by low activity and low speed, while a lowpolishing product is normally applied on vessels where high levels of activity and relatively high speeds are the norm. 11 Mechanical strength and hardness All GLOBIC antifouling products are extremely flexible, and therefore highly resilient in service. At the same time, they probably provide greater mechanical strength than any other antifouling solution currently available. It is the unique combination of microfibres, the inherent properties of the binder and its even distribution, working in unison, that gives this coating such flexibility along with the necessary hardness. All the wide range of impact tests, fender tests and blocksetting tests carried out on GLOBIC NCT confirm its ability to meet and exceed all current and expected requirements as regards mechanical strength, hardness and drying time.

GLOBIC NCT is a patented Hempel antifouling breakthrough that provides a wave of significant financial pay-offs. Using nanocapsule technology (NCT) to release the antifouling agents in a controlled flow means that owners and operators benefit from a fuel-efficient, low-drag hull at a low square-metre cost per service month over periods of as much as 60 months. There are also major savings on application, because repeated recoatings can be done with no need for a tie coat. Added to the benefits of reducing both the dry-film thickness and number of coats, this results in a wave of improvement to your financial balance. NCT

Enjoy the financial advantages With a wave of new pay-offs from the best choice of antifouling 13

GLOBIC NCT Enjoy the financial advantages Clean and lean For any ship owner or operator, it is important to keep the hull of each vessel clean and drag-free to minimise friction and thus keep fuel consumption down. It is particularly important because fuel is normally the largest single item of operating expenditure, amounting to more than 40 80% of total operating costs. Any decision about antifouling coatings therefore has a substantial financial impact, adding up to major sums for an entire fleet. Smooth sailing The self-polishing capabilities available with GLOBIC NCT antifouling are reflected in the hydrodynamic drag coefficient of the coating. Any improvement at all results in an immediate reduction in fuel consumption. Fibre-based GLOBIC NCT features hydrodynamic smoothness on the same high level as both the TBT-based antifoulings that were previously common and other technologies currently in use. High fuel prices mean that even minor reductions in fuel consumption result in significant improvements in overall operating costs. The fuel-saving benefits of high-performance antifouling coatings can only increase as fuel prices continue to escalate. The diagram below shows comparative figures for the financial impact plotted against speed performance available from these different technologies. GLOBIC NCT antifouling uses a patented acrylate nanocapsule solution to control self-polishing and release powerful antifouling agents at a consistent, carefully controlled rate over the entire service period. The result is a clean hull and a lean fuel bill. Financial impact versus speed perfomance Financial impact GLOBIC NCT is optimised for use on a wide range of vessel types. These include LPGs, container vessels, oil tankers, bulk carriers, ferries, naval vessels, general cargo ships and FPSOs Speed (knots) Smooth reference GLOBIC NCT Standard tin-free TBT-based reference Provoked dry spray 14

Less is more Any decision about adopting a new antifouling system focuses strongly on the basic square-metre cost per service month. GLOBIC NCT makes it possible to achieve a marked reduction in the cost of fouling protection per service month, because the technology provides a greater antifouling effect at lower polishing rates. The specified dry-film thickness is therefore lower. In addition, fewer coats are normally required, which also saves on drydock time as well as on application costs. The figures below illustrate typical specifications for dry-film thickness. 60 MONTHS SPECIFICATION Service parameters: 18 knot, 80% activity, in operation worldwide GLOBIC NCT GLOBIC NCT 8195M GLOBIC NCT 8195M Total thickness 140 microns 140 microns 280 microns Standard tin-free antifouling Antifouling 110 microns Antifouling Antifouling Total thickness 110 microns 110 microns 330 microns Reducing both the dry-film thickness and number of coats results in significant financial advantages and benefits. 15% less coating (by volume) is required, and eliminating one complete application means that the vessel returns to revenue-earning service more rapidly. The savings that can be reaped on both antifouling purchase and application costs normally amount to as much as 18 20% of the total cost of coating work while in drydock. Doing away with the tie coat As part of the development process, GLOBIC NCT was thoroughly tested on top of all other existing antifouling technologies. GLOBIC NCT proved compatible with virtually all of them, and can therefore be used to overcoat such systems with absolutely no need for a tie coat. Avoiding a tie coat saves on the purchase cost, in addition to the time and expenditure involved in one complete coating application. This provides yet one more financial advantage of adopting a GLOBIC NCT antifouling solution.
