1 Ciba Specialty Chemicals Performance Polymers Resin Systems STRUCTURAL COMPOSITES DATA SHEET DDM-free bismaleimide resin XB XB is a solid one-component system supplied in flakes. Due to its toxicity by inhalation, the ground version named XB 8297 will not be promoted. Applications High temperature applications (electrical and industrial) Properties The resin XB is suitable for replacement of the Kerimid B 601 and Kerimid B 1010 which were both based on diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) chemistry. Processing Pressure molding Prepregging after dilution of the resin in solvents Key data XB Aspect (visual) yellow-brown flakes Melting range (Kofler) Melt viscosity at 120 C 2000 [mpa.s] Reactivity at 170 C > 300 [s] Flash point (ISO 2719) > 95 Storage temperature < 8 Storage Provided that the resin XB is stored in a dry place in its original, properly closed containers at the above mentioned storage temperatures, it can be stored for 6 months. 2 Processing / Molding Compounds For the preparation of molding compounds, the resin can be mixed directly with the desired fillers. It has a high reactivity and offers a low melt viscosity as described below. Gel time (Hot plate) at min s Melt viscosity (ICI cone & plate) at 110 at 115 at 120 at 130 at 140 [mpa.s] The resin XB can be stored at room temperature for 1 week only. Preparation of the solid formulation should be done with the appropriate personal protection to prevent resin dust inhalation. In addition, to facilitate the handling of the product by preventing sintering, it is preferable to cool the resin before using it. If grinding has to be performed, it should be done with care to limit any warming up of the resin. Indeed, if the prepolymer reacts further during grinding, a different flow will be observed during molding. 3 Processing / Prepregs For the preparation of prepregs and laminates, the resin must be put in solution as described below. Solvent blends of PMA 1) / MEK 2) (70/30) may not allow a full dissolution of the product. The haze, which disappears during the preparation of prepregs, can be removed with the use of a high boiling solvent : butyrolactone 3) (boiling point 204 C). Nitrogen solvents such as NMP or DMF are not recommended because of too high affinity to the product. The temperature can be increased to 40- C to help dissolution, which should be completed within 1 hour. The varnishes are stable and can be stored at room temperature at least 2 days, and longer if pure butyrolactone is used. The drying of prepregs for solvent evaporation is done at 170 C for 3 to 5 minutes depending on the solvent used. 5 Handling precautions The XB resin contains significant amounts of free bismaleimide monomer and is therefore labeled as toxic by inhalation. Mandatory and recommended industrial hygiene procedures should be followed whenever the product is being handled and processed. For additional information please consult the corresponding product safety data sheets and the brochure Hygienic precautions for handling plastics products (Publ. No /e). Personal hygiene Safety precautions at workplace protective clothing yes gloves essential arm protectors recommended when skin contact likely goggles/safety glasses yes Skin protection before starting work after washing Cleansing of contaminated skin Disposal of spillage Ventilation of workshop of workplaces Apply barrier cream to exposed skin Apply barrier or nourishing cream Sweep up and shovel into suitable containers for disposal. Avoid dust formation. Soak up with sawdust or cotton waste and deposit in plastic-lined bin Renew air 3 to 5 times an hour Provide sufficient air exchange and exhaust in work rooms. Handle and open containers with care to avoid dust generation. In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment. First aid Contamination of the eyes by resin should be treated immediately by flushing with clean, running water for 10 to 15 minutes. A doctor should then be consulted. Following skin contact, wash off with soap and plenty of water. A doctor should be consulted in the event of irritation or burns. Contaminated clothing should be changed immediately. Anyone taken ill after inhaling dusts should be moved out of doors immediately. In all cases of doubt call for medical assistance.
