5th International Conference of Forestry Training Centres (Solsona - Spain) June 2016 Training on Non-Wood Forest Products: the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, from wild collection to handicraft production Eva Moré eva.more@ctfc.cat Group of Aromatic and MedicinalsPlants Non Wood Forest Products Department Forest Sciences Centre of Catalonia

NON WOOD FOREST PRODUCTS MEDICINAL AND AROMATIC PLANTS WILD HARVESTING HANDICRAFT PRODUCTION

NON WOOD FOREST PRODUCTS How to do the activity ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE? MEDICINAL AND AROMATIC PLANTS WILD HARVESTING How to do the activity ECONOMICALLY SUSTAINABLE? HANDICRAFT PRODUCTION TRAINING TO INVOLVED STAKEHOLDERS ADULT EDUCATION

2 PROJECTS ADRESSED TO ADULT EDUCATION: PLANT WILD -Forest Plant Wild Harvesting Learning in Europe. Partnership Association. GRUNDTVIG Livelong Learning Program SPAIN PORTUGAL LITHUANIA TURKEY HERBARTIS Adult Training on Handicraft Production of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Strategic Partnership Key Action 2. Erasmus+ Program SPAIN PORTUGAL ITALY FRANCE

OBJECTIVE Developing the necessary methodologies for implementing an effective training on wild harvestingof non wood forests products(nwfp), focusing specially in medicinal and aromatic plants(maps). SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES Promoting employment opportunities in rural and mountainous areas Enhancing sustainable wild harvesting techniques Generating best training practicesto obtain environmental and economical sustainability Determining tools to support trainers, learners and professionals. The project also allowed partners to know other realities that may be applied in their territories.

DISCUSSION OF SEVERAL TOPICS Mission and working linesof partners related to the NWFPs, and specifically to MAPs Research, technology transfer and training for adultsin NWFPs in each partner s country Sustainable wild harvesting of MAPs in each partner s country and challenges for implementing training Businesses of wild harvesting of MAPs in each partner s country and challenges for implementing training Good practices on training MAPs wild harvesting

TRAINING NEEDS DETECTED More people is searching new business or labouropportunitiesin rural areas, so more people are interested in harvesting of wild MAPs New collectors have low information in botanical identification and habitats knowledge, so training is needed on both subjects The use of good practices for the wild harvestingof MAPs, with support in the laws and with control, is needed to ensure that these natural resources are long term sustainable Mainly non professional harvesters, commissioned by buyers, should receive regular training in order to assure the sustainability of the activity. New entrepreneurial opportunities related to wild harvesting of MAPs need updated information or training on different uses of value chain (market information).

TRAINING NEEDS DETECTED Plant material quality is not differentiated when doing wild harvesting Collectors and even enterprises that use high quality botanicals need to be trained on varieties and chemotypes, phenology of each species related to the major active compounds content. In order to obtain good quality raw material Local population and professional harvesters should receive updated information about good collection and processing practices. Many harvesters use obsolete facilitiesfor processing the collected plant obtaining a low quality product. They should be trained on good manufacturing practices.

Essential knowledge for professional harvesting and sustainable usage of MAPs resources Knowledge of plant biology. Ecology, Botanical identification, Bioactive compounds and storage patterns, Theoretical and practical skills on plant harvesting and postharvesting technologies, Knowledge of market and business framework, Knowledge on legal acts and legislative measures regulating wild plant harvesting

PROPOSAL OF TRAINING UNITS 1. Basics of plant science with emphasis on MAPs. 2. Knowledge of MAPs species. 3. Harvesting of raw materials and use. 4. Sustainable wild harvesting: methodology, legislation and control. 5. Post-harvest processing of MAPs. 6. Marketing and business. Detailed information in

The Mediterranean area is characterized by mountainous areas Plenty of small-scale farms. MAPs production as opportunity Small productions are not enough to bulk-selling to wholesalers Elaboration of products made of herbs to sell directly to consumer HANDICRAFT PRODUCTION OF MAPs Entrepreneurs have to deal with different aspects (processing, safety aspects, norms and procedures, marketing, etc.) that go far beyond those simply producing herbs (cultivation/wild collection and raw material transformation) No specialised training is addressed for this craftsmanship

OBJECTIVE Achieve the professional development of adult learners by: developing useful tools and methods, improving the offer of high quality learning opportunities, validating the non-formal learning and career guidance. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES to provide educators with all the competences and skills needed to deliver high quality services to develop training tools addressed to adult learners from the primary production to achieve professional skills recognition of craft processing of aromatic and medicinal plants for obtaining high quality products.

ACTIVITIES TO BE IMPLEMENTED Knowing deeply the herbs craft s production sector needs and the existing training Designing a new curricula Designing the syllabus of a blended course (virtual/face-to-face) Developing a high quality training material Implementing a course as a test. Evaluating the qualification recognition and sustainability of the training INTELLECTUAL OUTPUTS PREVIEWED Guidelinesof training methodologies and policy recommendations for qualification recognition of herbal craft s production (book and reports). Syllabus of a blended course on herbal craft s production Training materials on herbal craft s production (course texts, training videos, seminars proceedings, herbal companies reports, networking conclusions).

TESTING COURSE Implementing a useful, practical and reachable training to adult learners using ICT tools and transnational mobilities, to enhance the peer-learning and the contact with existing businesses. Blended courses on herbal craft s production, one per country: on-line course, face-to-face practical workshops virtual networking activities. Transnational training activities (one per country): technical seminar, networking workshops and professional visits to sector s companies.

COURSE CONTENTS Food herbal craft production: Module 1: Production (cultivation / wild harvesting) Module 2: Transformation and quality of raw material Module 3: Herbal food elaboration techniques Module 4: Business, marketing and sale More detailed information soon in:
