1 DARTMOUTH COLLEGE OFFICE OF SPONSORED PROJECTS ANNUAL REPORT AND SUPPLEMENT TO THE FINANCIAL REPORT JUNE 30, 2005

2 Dartmouth College TELEPHONE (603) Office of Sponsored Projects FAX (603) Rope Ferry Road, #6210 Hanover, NH November 7, 2005 Dear Colleague: We are pleased to present to you the Office of Sponsored Projects Annual Report for the Fiscal Year It documents Dartmouth s outstanding ability to attract external support for research and other sponsored programs year after year. After nine consecutive years of growth, 2005 saw a reduction in awards dollars received. Our Executive Summary in Section E-1 illustrates, in text and graphs, the most salient features of Sponsored Research performance at Dartmouth College in Fiscal Year There you will find information describing the five year performance of the College in Awards Received, Yearly Percentage Growth in Annual Awards, Sponsor Source of Awards, the Percentage Growth in Awards from the College s Six Largest Sponsor Categories, Dollar Value of Proposals Submitted, and Distribution of Awards by Proposal Type (new, competing, non-competing, and supplement.) We think this summary will provide a useful overview of our performance, while succeeding sections provide greater detail. After the Executive Summary, Section 1 provides summary and analytical information about awards and proposals. This section includes tables and charts describing awards and proposals by major organizational units and programs. It also provides analysis of the sponsor sources of awards. Sections 2 through 8 provide detail information on awards and proposals, listing each under the school, office, or program that administered it in the order of the name of the Principal or Co-Investigator involved. These sections list the: School (or other major organizational unit) Department or program Name of the principal or co-investigator Sponsoring agency Type of agency: Government, State or local government, Foundation, Corporation, Educational Institution, Private Non-Profit organization (other than foundations), or Other (indicated by a "Z"). proposal or award dollar value (listed for Principal Investigator only) Proposal type (New, Non-Competing Renewal, Competing Renewal, Supplement) of project. Once again, in this year s report we ve worked in conjunction with our colleagues at the Dartmouth Medical School and in Arts & Sciences to assign awards and proposals based on the Principal Investigator s home department as identified by the Office of Human Resources. This was done to make forecasting and analysis of future grant activity more reliable. As a result of this effort some awards and proposals may not be listed under the department indicated in project documentation submitted to our office. We ve changed some business processes that will enable us, beginning in fiscal year 2006, to begin reporting expenses in a similar fashion. Sections 10 through 16 provide summary and analytical views of sponsored expenses. This report of grant and contract expenditures is a supplement to the College Financial Report. A final section provides a Glossary of terms and acronyms used in this report. As in the past this report contains information on corporate and industry activity that is defined as support for research or sponsored projects, not normally considered corporate philanthropy. There may be some overlap in the projects reported here and again in the report generated by the Development Offices of the College and DHMC. This report also does not generally include grants made directly to individual faculty. If you have any questions or comments, please call me at Sincerely, Director, Office of Sponsored Projects
