The successful candidate will be involved in laboratory-based research, including molecular biology, stem cell biology, and developmental biology. The successful applicant will also be responsible for maintenance tasks required to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the laboratory. The appointee will have a Bachelor degree with Honours in science or a related discipline. Precision in experimental work and book keeping, as well as excellent organisational skills are required, along with willingness to work within a team-orientated environment. 2 Organisational environment The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research The institute, established in 1915, currently houses 16 research divisions, containing around 82 laboratories and 1100 staff, with an annual budget of approximately A$100 million. The institute s research focuses on cancer (breast, cancer, leukaemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, lung cancer, colon cancer, and ovarian cancer), infectious disease (malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, and hepatitis) and chronic inflammatory and immune diseases (coeliac disease, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and transplantation) and continues a strong tradition of collaboration and interdisciplinary programs. The institute has a strong national and international reputation for performing highly influential research and for translation that leads to long term improvements in disease, diagnosis and treatment. The institute s main laboratories are located within the Parkville precinct, a vibrant hub for life science research, education and healthcare provision. In addition, the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute Biotechnology Centre is located 30 minutes from Parkville at La Trobe University s R&D Park in Bundoora. The Biotechnology Centre features facilities for high-throughput chemical screening, medicinal chemistry, antibody production and malaria containment. The centre also functions as an incubator for the institute s biotechnology companies. 3 Organisational values Pursuit of excellence Integrity and mutual respect Collaboration and teamwork Creativity Contribution to society Accountability Key responsibilities Activities Performing Experiments The primary objective of this position is to support all projects in the laboratory at a highly skilled technical level by: Undertaking experimental work from established protocols, by optimising existing and potentially developing new protocols in laboratory-based research including molecular biology, stem cell biology and developmental biology Utilising a variety of experimental approaches (for which training will be provided as needed) including: RNA-sequencing, chromatin immunoprecipitation, protein biochemistry, immunofluorescence, cell isolation, cell culture, histology/histopathology and fluorescenceactivated cell sorting After a training period, the successful applicant is expected to take complete responsibility for the accuracy of the results produced and recorded, as well as for the organisation of the work in their periods of absence. Record Keeping Sourcing and reading literature relevant to the experimental methods Accurate analysis and interpretation of results Analysing problems and researching appropriate solutions Laboratory Maintenance The successful candidate will also be responsible for maintenance tasks required to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the laboratory. Maintain stock solutions, reagents and equipment in good order Maintain laboratory record and databases of reagents Maintaining the record of all hazardous chemicals, ensuring their safe storage in the laboratory, and for maintaining safe and good laboratory practice Performance Indicators Completing experiments and analysing results within an allocated time frame Meticulous maintenance of reagents and cell lines Presenting results to senior management (Lab heads and Division Head) Contributions to team effort on major experiments Accurate and timely recording of experiments in laboratory notebooks Accurate experimental procedures and records Accurate and timely recording of experiments in laboratory notebooks Accurate experimental procedures and records Ensure that the laboratory complies with biosafety and other statutory regulations Ensure that reagents can be readily accessed for the efficient running of the laboratory Page 3 of 5

4 Key Relationships/Interactions Lab Heads receive instructions on experiments, and report back results/problems/issues Lab Members work with other lab members, including students, as directed by Lab Head Other staff and students receive and give advice on unfamiliar procedures etc. Division Head receive instructions on Divisional matters Key Challenges Performing high quality laboratory assays including molecular biology, developmental biology, and stem cell biology Keeping accurate and timely records of experiments conducted Maintaining a safe working environment, in compliance with guidelines Keeping laboratory supplies and inventories up to date Performing experiments efficiently in a timely fashion Maintaining courteous, professional interactions with all colleagues at all times, including during times of high workload Freedom to Act The majority of experiments will follow established protocols, and the candidate will determine how to optimise workflow, priorities etc. for a given day or week, as appropriate. Able to work effectively and independently once training in required techniques is complete. Able to resolve problems and achieve objectives while taking guidance from subject experts.
