Project idea # 1 A process alternative for electroplating of hard chrome coatings sirris info@sirris.be 22-23/01/2013 4

An extra layer on your products, a large added value for your business Easy-to-clean, heat insulating, antimicrobial, wear resistant, superhydrophilic, chemical barrier, conductive, scratch resistant, biocompatible, antireflective, decorative, sirris info@sirris.be 22-23/01/2013 5

Hard Chrome Problem: Electroplated hard chrome (as used in industry): excellent hardness and corrosion resistance BUT: environmental and health issues (CrVI)! Alternative processes needed. Lot of processes tried in the past: Thermal spraying Weld facing methods Heat treatment methods Vapor deposition methods Functionally trivalent electroplating None of these processes are a breakthrough (for different reasons) sirris info@sirris.be 22-23/01/2013 6

Hard Chrome sirris /01/2013 7

Hard Chrome Proposal: HIPIMS PVD CrN as an alternative process for electroplated hard Cr Hipims, Hipims-MPP, Hipims-DCMS Advantages Very dense coatings, enhanced adhesion More conformal coatings than traditional PVD Internal coating possible No health or environmental risks High-rate deposition achievable with Modulated Pulse Power (MPP)* Positive impact on process cost Disadvantages High capital cost for PVD equipment night be a problem for investors HIPIMS =High-power impulse magnetron sputtering *Lin et al., SurfCoatTech, 205, 2011 sirris info@sirris.be 22-23/01/2013 8

Possible funding channel CORNET (March 28, 2013) Project consortia of associations, clusters, federations or groupings of industrial enterprises (especially SMEs) from at least 2 different CORNET countries are invited to submit proposals for joint collective research projects. 12 Project idea # 2 Development of sensors for detection of fracture initiation and propagation in plastic and metal composites sirris info@sirris.be 22-23/01/

Now, it s time for the SMART revolution, Walsmart guidance for food industry, life science, packaging, processes, energy, traceability, With the support of Walsmart partenership sirris info@sirris.be 22-23/01/

Sensors for health monitoring of heavily strained plastic composites Challenge: The technology required to accurately and continuously monitor all critical material aspects of composites is lacking today. Health monitoring of critical structures such as in aeroplanes is a major challenge. This project aims at embedding piezo sensors in plastic composite material for the continuous detection of crack initiation and crack propagation in heavily strained plastic composites Description of research aims: Application of non-destructive measurement of defects in plastic and metal composites by embedding piezo sensors into the composite, By directly printing of sensors on polymer-based material and on metal Deeper understanding of printing processes and subsequent optimisation of these processes Testing of application in aerospace structures: added value in all stages of the product life cycle - health monitoring sirris info@sirris.be 22-23/01/
