1 FR-122P Polymeric FR FR-122P is a new high molecular weight Polymeric Flame Retardant additive for use in Extruded Polystyrene Foam (XPS) insulation applications, as a replacement for FR-1206 Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD). With a more sustainable health, safety and environmental profile, FR-122P is positioned to be the next generation flame retardant. FR-122P is designed to enable producers to continue to meet stringent flammability and critical foam performance criteria. Polymeric additives by their very nature have inherently better environmental and health risk profiles and often provide a more sustainable solution than smaller molecules. FR-122P has typically 63-65% bromine and its thermogravimetric analysis indicates a 5% weight loss at minimum C, while this value for HBCD stands at C. (See properties and chemical structure in Table 1 and Figure 1&2). Figure 1 and Table 1: Properties and Chemical Structure of FR-122P Properties of FR-122P Physical appearance Bromine content, w % Solubility (water), g/l Loss on drying % white to off-white powder 62.5 min. 2 Figure 2 : Thermogravimetric analysis of FR-122P FR-122P guidance for XPS applications The thermal stability of the FR system is a major factor for the industry as it aims at increasing operating temperatures and recycling streams. Therefore thermal stability is critical, since the FR system is often compounded in a masterbatch first, giving it already a thermal history. The following recommended additives and levels are designed to provide a stabilized FR- 122P formulation for XPS foam to achieve good thermal stability in the XPS foaming and recycling processes. Good operating discipline is still needed to avoid extreme thermal or oxidative scenarios which can lead to excessive degradation. For stabilizing FR-122P, our recommendation is to use epoxy based resins as acid scavenger. The recommended level of the epoxy acid scavenger is based on the equivalent level of bromine that is being added to the XPS foam. The epoxy loading should be 10 2

3 equivalent percent for every bromine mol equivalent added as FR-122P. Note all these are mol equivalents, not weight percentages. See figures 3a and 3b. Excellent stabilization and discoloration prevention can be achieved by adding ICL-IP Brominated Epoxy specialty F-2200 HM in combination with Hydrotalcite as acid scavenger. The comparative color change values during heating at C for 15 minutes and at C for 30 minutes in HIPS are shown in Figure 3a and 3b. Furthermore, F-2200 HM is melted during the extrusion process and acting as a processing aid, enhances flowing properties. 4 Flammability Performances FR-122P offers similar flammability performances to FR-1206 (HBCD). The main tested properties are shown in figures 4 to 6. Figure 4: XPS foam LOI, FR-122P and FR-1206 (HBCD), at 1.9% Br.

5 Figure 5: German Standard DIN-4102 B2, XPS foam, FR-122P and FR-1206 (HBCD) *!"#$ (*): Sample passes the test if the flame height is lower than 15 cm for all specimens. Figure 6: French Standard Epiradiateur M1, XPS foam, FR-122P and FR-1206 (HBCD) * & "'(" )!* +! )"#+$ % (*): Withstand the test if 90% of the sample extinguishes in less than 2 sec and no burning droplets.

6 Technical Performances FR-122P contributes to keep the foam properties (insulation, compression strength and heat distortion). FR-122P can be used as a suitable HBCD replacement without significant formulation changes. FR-122P can be used in combination with standard Flame Retardant Synergist in XPS applications. Health Safety - Environmental aspects FR-122P is a high molecular weight substance that has been subjected to an extensive and robust EH&S testing schedule and evaluation. Laboratory studies supplemented by modeling results clearly indicate that: - FR-122P is not a Persistent, Bioaccumulative and Toxic (PBT) substance. - FR-122P will not adversely affect human health. - FR-122P is not a mutagen, reproductive toxin nor a probable carcinogen (CMR). 6
