BMS is committed to developing scientists for the betterment of our country Higher National Diploma Biomedical Science leading to final year of BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science

Committed to supporting students to become scientists W A Wijewardena President, BMS Developing Scientists to serve the country After 36 years of my career at the Central Bank, I am pleased to provide BMS with the strategic leadership needed to mould it into an institution with an unparalleled reputation for quality learning and dissemination of knowledge. BMS is entering its sixteenth year of success in adopting a modern approach to education in association with the best of the British education system, while incorporating the flexibility of the module credit system leading to a British degree. BMS's specialty is its focus on the choice of its courses with international recognition and high degree of employability. BMS takes pride in being the pioneer in Sri Lanka to offer a higher level Diploma in Biomedical Science leading to a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science Degree from Northumbria University, UK, with a view to developing the needed Biomedical Scientists for the country. The addition of the Biomedical Science programme to our courses was a fulfillment of a long - felt need to provide an opportunity for A/L Science students who were unable to secure a place in our local universities. BMS is committed to developing scientists for the betterment of our country. Mr. Wijewardena held the positions of Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Chairman of the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Accounting and Auditing Standards Monitoring Board during

Ms. Julie Edgar, Associate Dean (International), Faculty of Health & Life Sciences, Northumbria University UK with BMS biomedical students. Biomedical Science Biomedical Science is the application of biology - based science for medical use. It will allow you to learn about the human body at the organ, tissue, cell and sub cellular levels. You will also learn how these systems are affected by various diseases and how an accurate diagnosis can be made using a variety of laboratory tests. The subjects studied in biomedical science are broadly those studied as pre-clinical components of a medical degree. Biomedical Scientist Biomedical scientists work in healthcare to diagnose diseases and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment through the analysis of fluids and tissue samples from patients. They investigate diseases using scientific tools and procedures and operate the 'engine room' of the modern medical treatment in which about 70% of diagnosis of diseases are made through pathological testing and investigations. The Institute of Biomedical Science is the professional body for Biomedical Scientists in the UK. 02

BMS is my No.1 choice for achieving my dream of becoming a Biomedical Scientist Shayani Vithanage Batch 9 Laboratory Techniques The module develops learners' practical skills in chemical and biochemical techniques, and allows them to carry out practicals and evaluate and interpret the results. The experiments carried out will relate to various methods of analysis. Theoretical aspects of various techniques, which may not be available in the laboratory, will also be covered. Semester 2 Human Anatomy & Physiology The module focuses principally on the underlying knowledge of anatomical structure and physiological functions of the human body. This will be essential for learners who wish to understand how the various systems of the human body operate. The module also introduces the concept of homeostasis within the human body and the control systems engaged in the maintenance of the internal environment. Molecular Biology and Genetics The module enables students to understand the processes responsible for the maintenance, transmission, and expression of genetic information at a molecular level and carry out experimental techniques associated with them. The module will also provide the understanding of the structure and function of macromolecules and macromolecular complexes of DNA, RNA, and protein. Histology and Haematology The aim of this module is to investigate and evaluate the processes involved in histology, which includes preparation of pathological specimen, practice of microscopy, histopathology, and cytopathology. The module will be achieved by highlighting clinical and diagnostic applications of the underlying theory wherever possible. It will also concentrate on the functions of blood and blood disorders to understand common diseases in haematology. 05

Batch 09 students at Group Presentation day Medical Microbiology The module develops an understanding in both the theoretical and practical aspects of medical microbiology. Learners will understand the importance of collecting specimens from patients and will review the methods of collection and preservation of the sample and safety. The module enables learners to examine the theory and practice involved in the isolation and identification of certain micro-organisms. Learners will also have the opportunity to assess the role of certain antibiotics in combating pathogenic micro-organisms and explore methods of screening antibiotic sensitivity from a practical perspective. Work-based Assignment The module enables learners to gain credits for work-based practical investigation as an individual and also as a part of a team. Learners will be provided an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a hospital-based diagnostic laboratory environment related to diagnostic testing of infectious and genetic diseases, which forms a short internship. Laboratory Management The module enables learners to gain an understanding of an organization of different types of laboratory and compare the processes associated with their management. The module examines the typical responsibilities of laboratory managers and types of laboratories, which include contract analytical laboratories, project laboratories, quality control laboratories, and educational laboratories. Semester 3 Clinical Biochemistry The module aims to demonstrate the important role that biochemical investigation plays in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The rationale behind routine tests such as electrolyte measurements and metabolite and enzyme assays will be studied, with the emphasis on both the underlying pathophysiology and the contribution that these tests make to the diagnosis and to the management of the patient. Consideration will also be given to more specialized investigations in the areas of endocrinology and toxicology, including recent analytical developments. 06

Biomedical HND students at BMS graduation 2015 Biology of Disease The module will provide a thorough grounding in the causes and consequences of damage to cells, increase understanding of the pathological effects of cellular injury, and explore the consequences of changes in external environment and disease on the physiology of the human body. Pharmacology The module covers the areas of pharmacology necessary for an appreciation of the rationale for drug action. It enables learners to analyse clinical data and understand the pharmacokinetic processes of diseases affecting the nervous system and the subsequent effects of drug treatments. The students will also study the function of the immune system, gaining an appreciation of the drugs that stimulate and suppress it. Analysis of Scientific Data and Information The module develops skills in mathematical and statistical techniques used in the analysis of scientific data, together with an understanding of the limitations in reporting results. Semester 4 Project The module enables students to engage in a research project and to present their evaluation of the relevant primary literature and their own findings in a written report. Scientists are frequently required to select and apply appropriate knowledge and skills to solve scientific problems. Learners will have the opportunity to integrate the knowledge and skills that they have acquired from past modules by applying them to an extended individual study. Teaching Method Modules (units) are delivered using a combination of lecture based and laboratory based instruction allowing you to learn biomedical sciences in a practical context. Assessment A wide range of assessment methods are utilised, including examinations, assignments, laboratory work and presentations. 07
