1 University of Technology of Compiegne - France Department of Biological Engineering Courses List

2 INTRODUCTION One aim of UTC is to prepare students for the French Engineering degree. This degree is highly valued in France as it is equivalent to a high level master's degree. The formation toward the French Engineering degree is divided into a 2-year program of "Fundamental studies" followed by a 3-year program of "Major studies". Fundamental studies: This first program (Tronc Commun) which aims at giving a solid scientific background to students, offers a large range of scientific and technical courses. Major studies: This program aims at progressively professionalize students by providing them with a general and well-balanced training in the academic department of their choice. Specialized courses and training that fit students for their future career are given during the last three 3 semesters of the Major. Two six-month internships in industry allow student to develop strong professional skills. The four categories of courses: - Scientific knowledge - Techniques and Methods - Project Management - Technology and Human sciences The first three categories provide courses that are specific to each major whereas the category Technology and Human sciences provides courses that are common to every major. The courses for the Biological Engineering Major and corresponding to the first three categories are described in the present document. The ECTS grading scale: This is a grading system defined in the ECTS framework by the European Commission. Since several grading systems co-exist in Europe, the ECTS grading scale has been developed in order to provide a common currency and facilitate the transfer of students and their grades between European higher education institutions. Basically one year of studies is equivalent to 60 ECTS. 2

3 BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING Biological engineers must be able to act at the interface between different fields and are therefore taught skills regarding not only biological sciences but also chemistry, physics and computer sciences. The teaching program is designed to provide a well-balanced education between scientific culture and technical background through four specializations. Areas of specialization: - Design and innovation of bio-products (CIB) - Innovation in food and agro-resources (IAA) - Biomaterials and biomechanics (BB) - Biomedical engineering (BM) Each student has to follow specific courses corresponding to his specialization but also courses common to any student of the Biological Engineering major in order to gain more general skills in Biological engineering. ~~~~ Legend for the courses of specialization Specialization Design and innovation of bio-products (CIB) Innovation in food and agro-resources (IAA) Biomaterials and biomechanics (BB) Biomedical engineering (BM) Symbol 3
