LEGTECH pportunities and Challenges for the Industry and University Cooperation The aim is to present some visionary thoughts Advanced bioresources and smart bioproducts; Towards Sustainable Bioeconomy A Biocity Turku Research Programme Lars Gädda, Sept 2016 LEGTECH
European forests are in Russia and in the Nordic Countries Lars Gädda, Metsäklusteri y Source: EFI Research Report 14
Research and Innovation Research Money Innovation Knowledge 3
Industry expects and needs new skills and knowledge; New employees New ideas Innovations
Knowledge and Brain power; ne of the most important output from university towards industry is in-depth, science based and well educated employees. This is the best and most effective information transfer to industry.
How to generate ideas and opportunities for industry A hypothesis or description, by university researchers, of the possible industrial application and relevance of the different research activities and results is desired and expected by the industry Åbo Akademi Domkyrkotorget Åbo
Best personalities in different phases INNTIIMI Implementers Forth we need people who implement the concrete innovations and help to commercialize them Implementability of the idea Innovators Concretisers Champions Third we need people who concretize the ideas and make a concept into more usable from Second we need people who see the benefits of new ideas and are willing to take risk in taking ideas forward First we need people who are interested in and enthusiastic about new ideas and concepts 7 Innovation process
Appendix 1 What influences the process of innovation? Innovation generates economic, ecological and social progress Markets low acceptance Uneconomical out-ofdate Technologies innovation Society needs 8
Future BIECNMY??? Energy Well-being BULLS EYE Forest Chemistry 9
Synthesis of Industry experts opinions pportunities for Innovations; Perform research and development in cross border application areas, which are important for the society and industry. Examples of such areas are bio raw material based chemicals and materials for material applications and feed, advanced and active chemicals and materials for health, chemistry and chemical technology based solutions for the future recycling economy. Sharp and brave research openings around these themes are expected by the FS members. 10 Challenges for Research; Fundamental research must be brave and demanding and generate the knowledge base, which is necessary and needed when future key production technologies are developed in production of chemicals and materials from various bio raw materials and recycling raw materials. Åbo Akademi Domkyrkotorget Åbo
LEGTECH The biggest risk in the path towars the future bioeconomy is to avoid risks. Brave research and brave resarchers!!! LEGTECH
A major change in the production paradigm is Needed LEGTECH 1. A totally new production technology has been developed.and demonstrated. The fundamentals of this technology was laid through studies of the solubility properties of biomasses. 2. Totally new product categories has been developed after the initial production technology breakthroughs. 3. These new production categories are under the topics: biofuels, biopolymers and biochemicals 4. These products are typically intermediates for various final products 5. Several new start up companies have been created. These aim to benefit from and utilize the new technological breakthroughs LEGTECH
LEGTECH Prerequisites for mental renewal in university and in industry 1. Become necessary agile (A flock of herrings instead of a whale fish or super tanker) 2. An activity jump, an open-minded testing, new initiatives and practical trials attitude. 3. Various pilot plants and test beds have been built and are incredible actively and effectively used 4. A jump to the next knowledge level has been achieved (macro>>micro>>nano>>molecular) 5. Internationally recognized Living Labs and Testing Facilities available for interested parties. LEGTECH
New business models must be developed LEGTECH 1. The implementation of the business model from Cradle to Grave has successfully been implemented as one cornerstone of bioeconomy. 2. The revenue generation model which based on that all biomass raw material is sold at least three times (borrowed to the applying industry once or several times) before it is finally used as bioenergy. LEGTECH
LEGTECH A jump to the next knowledge level By universities and industry 1. Parties within the future bioeconomy have made a substantial knowledge jump, which have led to a totally new understanding of biomasses, their structures, individual polymers and chemicals, their properties and potential uses. 2. The value of products in traditional value chains has been increased through these developments, especially their environmental and customer value 3. Novel biomaterial and biochemical applications have been developed based on this new knowledge 4. Biobased polymers for applications as fiber, film and composites have entered the markets through untraditional partnerships and networks LEGTECH
