1 Product Information PIRR 850 Slimicide CAS Reg. No (Canada nly) General PIRR 850 Slimicide is a high performing microbicides based on glutaraldehyde. It is effective against the bacteria and fungi present in papermaking systems and useful in preventing the formation of slime in all areas of the papermaking process. For paper applications, this product is sold in Canada as PIRR 850 Slimicide. For all other regions and applications, please refer to UCARCIDE 50 Antimicrobial. A majority of these chemicals, including slimicides, are added to the wet stock and are referred to as wet-end additives. 2 not interfere with function of the additives, it is equally important that the additives have no deleterious effect on the efficacy of the slimicide. A series of laboratory experiments were conducted to determine if commonly used wet-end additives would adversely affect the performance of PIRR 850 Slimicide. Table 1 shows the effect of alum, calcium carbonate, kaolin clay, rosin, starch, sulfite and titanium dioxide on the biocidal efficacy of 25 ppm active slimicide. All additives were tested at a concentration of 0.5 percent, with the exception of calcium carbonate (0.1 percent), and sulfite (0.005 percent). The experiments were conducted at p 7, using a pure strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The results compare the efficacy of the active slimicide in the presence of the additives with a sample that contained slimicide alone. After one hour, all samples showed a greater than 99% reduction in microorganism levels. After three hours, the reduction was essentially complete, demonstrating the effectiveness of PIRR 850 Slimicide in the presence of these chemicals. When uncontrolled, the growth of microorganisms can lead to serious process and quality problems, including offensive odors, corrosion of equipment, and spots and breaks in the paper. The following experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of PIRR 850 Slimicide against the many types of microorganisms found in papermaking systems. The activity of PIRR 850 Slimicide was determined in samples of whitewater obtained from two different paper mills that had been experiencing microbiological problems. The alkaline samples consisted mainly of Pseudomonas, Bacillus, and Klebsiella species, while Klebsiella and Rhodotorula predominated in the acidic sample. The contaminated water samples were diluted (1:4) with deionized water and treated with various concentrations of the slimicide. The results of these experiments are shown in Table 2. As the results show, PIRR 850 Slimicide greatly reduced the level of microorganisms in both acidic (p 5.3) and alkaline (p 8.1) systems. 3 The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) has developed a test method to determine the efficacy of slimicides. This method involves the use of an aqueous buffered solution contaminated with pulp and rosin and inoculated with a test organism (Enterobacter aerogenes or Pseudomonas aeruginosa). The contact time of the slimicide is three hours from the time the pulp culture is inoculated. The results shown in Table 3 demonstrate the excellent performance of PIRR 850 Slimicide in this standard test protocol. Although 80 percent reductions in microorganism populations are considered effective by the ASTM, PIRR 850 Slimicide brought about a greater than 90 percent reduction at 25 ppm and essentially complete kill at 50 ppm. E. aerogenes, CFU/mL 1 % Reduction 0 (control) 2.0 x x ND ND (1) ND = None Detectable Efficacy vs. Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB's) are anaerobic microorganisms often found under slime deposits where the oxygen tension is low. These organisms are responsible for corrosion of equipment and odor problems. A series of experiments were performed to determine the effectiveness of PIRR 850 Slimicide against Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, a well know species of sulfate-reducing bacteria. The experiments were designed to test the effectiveness of the slimicides in a system which contained high levels of sulfate-reducing bacteria. Figure 1 summarizes the results of the experiment. PIRR 850 Slimicide concentrations are in parts per million (ppm) active ingredient. The bacteria were exposed to the slimicide for periods of 3, 7 and 24 hours, at which point the solutions were enumerated by serial dilution. The graph illustrates the outstanding ability of PIRR 850 Slimicide to reduce the level of sulfate-reducing bacteria present in the solutions at any time point. Initial Treatment: When the system is noticeably contaminated, add 0.5 to 3.0 lbs. of PIRR 850 Slimicide per ton of dry pulp or paper (dry basis) as a slug dose. Subsequent Dose: When microbial control is evident, add 0.3 to 2.0 lbs. of PIRR 850 Slimicide per ton of pulp or paper (dry basis) as a slug dose as necessary to maintain control. This equipment includes proper gloves, chemical goggles, coveralls and when necessary, full-face respiratory equipment. An eyewash fountain should be located in the immediate work area. Do not spray or aerosolize the undiluted form of the product. Full personal protection equipment (including skin covering and full-face SCBA respirator) is required for dilutions or mixtures of the product used in a spray application.
