2 Why Choose This Programme? Biomedical Science, although well-established as a scientific discipline, is also a rapidly-advancing medical subject, constantly striving towards improving human health and creating a need for highly-skilled biomedical scientists. This degree is designed to give you a broad understanding of the scientific investigation of human health and disease. It covers the key aspects and principles of biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, physiology and toxicology and their application to the causes and management of diseases. More specific knowledge of disease processes comes from the study of clinical laboratory specialties, such as cellular pathology, clinical biochemistry, clinical immunology, haematology, clinical genetics and medical microbiology. This enables a biomedical scientist to understand the science of the causes, consequences, diagnosis and treatment of disease. You will be equipped with the skills necessary to plan and perform a research project and be aware of the need for good laboratory practice, health and safety, and legal and ethical considerations. Your learning is supported by Edinburgh Napier University s research teams who are at the forefront of medical research, which gives you the opportunity to conduct your own independent research project for publication. Learning Objectives On completion of this programme of study you will have: A broad based, core knowledge and understanding off Biomedical Science, including study of organisms, their molecular, cellular and physiological processes, their genetics and evolution, and the interrelationships between them and their environment. A critical understanding of the validity and reliability of scientific knowledge, and the uncertainties and difficulties involved in acquiring new scientific knowledge. A comprehensive repertoire of practical laboratory skills used to safely and ethically collect data in subject specific areas, such as microbiology, immunology, toxicology and molecular biology. The analytical, numerical, statistical and IT skills to record data and then to extract and communicate testable conclusions. The skills to independently resolve complex scientific problems by analysing appropriate knowledge, concepts and data from a range of sources. The ability to compare and summarise your own views and those of others to critically evaluate and different scientific and ethical positions. A range of employability skills relevant to many professional contexts where there is a need for problem solving, decisionmaking and personal responsibility. What Can I Work As? As Edinburgh s top university for Graduate Employability (HESA 2010) and one of the top in the UK for Graduate Prospects (The Independent and The Times University Guides for 2009), we offer you a valuable head-start in your chosen career. The skills you gain will prepare you to work as: Immunologist Endocrinologist Physiologist Biomedical Scientist Epidemiologist Clinical Laboratory Technologist and Technician Course Structure A total of 6 modules and 3 modules & 1 Scientific Research Project have to be completed and passed for the awards of the Bachelor of Science Biomedical Science and Bachelor of Science (Hons) Biomedical Science respectively. 3 Articulation Pathway BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science (Edinburgh Napier University) BSc Biomedical Science (Edinburgh Napier University) Polytechnic Diploma in Biomedical Science from Singapore Advanced Diploma in Biomedical Science (CSM Academy) Diploma in Biomedical Science (CSM Academy) Other Diploma in Biomedical Science Synopsis of Modules - Bachelor of Science Biomedical Science Immunology In this module you will explore the molecular and cellular network which underlies the functions of the normal human immune system. The role of the immune system in diseases such as autoimmune disorders and allergy will also be explored. Immunotechnology will be covered including blood typing, transplantation, monoclonal antibodies and vaccines, illustrating the value of immunology in diagnosis and therapeutics. Clinical Biochemistry This module is an introduction to the application of biochemistry in a clinical setting and how this knowledge can be used to diagnose disease or change in vivo and/or explain the action of administered drug molecules. You will be given an insight into the workings of a modern hospital clinical biochemistry laboratory, routine tests and their biochemical basis, the interpretation of test results and relevance of test results in a clinical biochemical setting. Pharmacology & Pathophysiology This module covers the biological mechanisms underlying disease, identification of therapeutic targets, and the potential side-effects associated with medicines. You will be introduced to the general principles of pharmacology and toxicology, using specific examples to describe the fate of xenobiotics as they enter the body, are absorbed, distributed, metabolised, and then excreted from the body. Targets for therapeutic drugs will be examined, illustrating the potential for wide actions of drugs in the body, and the importance of drug specificity. The physiological and biochemical basis of major diseases will be explored, and novel areas of drug development will be discussed. Scientific Communication Dissertation & Statistics In this module you will review primary scientific literature on an agreed topic relating to your area of study. You will search for and abstract from relevant primary literature and write a 3000-word review using Harvard style citations throughout. You will present potentially conflicting information in a scientific and objective style. In the statistics part of the module you will formulate appropriate experimental designs for a variety of circumstances and analyse data using analysis of variance, regression analysis and repeated measures techniques and learn when it is appropriate to use each of these methods. Medical Microbiology In this module you will examine medically important pathogens including viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. You will explore the role of the host immune system and how microbes may overcome it to cause disease, and gain an understanding of how infectious disease is diagnosed and treated. You will also develop important transferable skills in critical and analytical thinking as well as laboratory techniques in medical microbiology. Molecular Genetics Starting with a revision of DNA/RNA structure and function, and transfer of genetic information, this module is designed to cover the key concepts of molecular genetics and to give you experience of some of its techniques. You will study what happens when DNA is damaged by chemicals or radiation in our environment; how this damage can sometimes be repaired, and what can happen if repair does not occur; how DNA can be transferred between bacteria either directly or through the action of plasmids or viruses, and how we can map the position of genes on a bacterial chromosome. The mapping of DNA molecules with restriction enzymes leads on to a study of the fundamental techniques of recombinant DNA technology (known as gene cloning or genetic engineering). Finally, a study will be made of the different mechanisms employed in gene regulation in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms: how genes can be switched on or off in response to different stimuli.

4 Synopsis of Modules - Bachelor of Science (Hons) Biomedical Science Applications of Molecular Biology (*) In this module you will study the structure and organisation of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genomes. You will examine the properties of repetitive DNA and relate these to theories of human genome evolution and applications in DNA fingerprinting/profiling. You will appraise the tools of modern molecular biological analysis and develop an appreciation of the uses, designs and limitations of these tools in contributing to our understanding of biological systems. You will develop an understanding of strategies used for gene cloning and heterologous gene expression. Cellular & Molecular Immunology (*) You will explore the cells and molecules of the human immune system and the role of the immune system in health and disease. You will learn how the immune system changes with age and why older humans are at an increased risk of infection and developing cancers and autoimmune disorders. You will explore the complex cellular interactions and intracellular signalling pathways which enable the immune system to respond to foreign antigens and protect the individual from infectious disease. You will also learn how physical exercise and parasitic infections are capable of modulating the immune system. You will develop your analytical skills as you learn about the principles of antibody development and technology and how to interpret complex data. Furthermore, your scientific writing skills and ability to critique scientific research in immunology will be developed from both debates on current issues, and assessments. Cellular & Molecular Pathology (*) In this module you will study the factors that induce disease at a cellular and a molecular level, such as environmental stimuli, genetic factors and viral infections. You will also learn about the mechanisms of disease including inflammation, oxidative stress, cell signalling alterations and developmental processes. You will then go on to study disease outcomes, including cardiovascular disease, fibrosis, cancer, and reduced fertility. In addition to scientific content you will develop data analysis and interpretation, critical analysis, hypothesis generation, study design and communication skills. Scientific Research Project In this module you will conduct an independent scientific research and/or work-related project, developing skills in project planning and time. (*) - No laboratory session is required for these modules.
