The challenges of the Medical Laboratory Market and the benefits of interoperability Marco Sneevliet Ducere BV and Business Innovation Design
How to survive the challenge?
The landscape in the Netherlands Netherlands has an estimated of 400 active medical laboratory s (all kinds) Estimation is that in 5 to 7 years this will be significantly less. End situation might be a total of laboratory s However the pace of reaching this estimation is very slow at the moment will not be met at this pace.
3 types of Laboratories Clinical/Chemical laboratory Diagnostics on blood, urine and other body materials Pathology Anatomic laboratory Diagnostics on body tissue Breast and intestine disease Microbiology laboratory Diagnostics on bacteria, fungi, parasites etc. Testing on infections
Laboratory market drivers Overcapacity in Laboratories in NL Due to automation Future in 10 years, 10 to 15 large regional labs Labs are merging in order to survive Capital investments Bigger and more diverse customer base Demand for Interoperability Concentration on a regional basis Increased Patient involvement Patient demand for more information directly from labs Patient portals Home monitoring
Laboratory Needs LIMS (Lab Information Management System) ESB (Enterprise Service Bus - message highway) Key components: Pricing Technology Big data Processes Patient Portals Data from multiple sources in different formats Hospitals, GP s, and Care Institutions HL7 V2, Edifact, local standards Unambiguous Patient Identification Care providers, Government and Payers have different data Exception handling by Workflow Process optimization Automate as much as possible Staff only reacts on irregularities
The Challenge How to Survive? Autonomic growth Partner up Ally Buy Be bought None of the above: Get extinct
Learn to adapt more new stuff in the business 4th revolution or innovation? 3D-printers, Nano- technology's, saturation meters in smartphones Develop advanced technologies and techniques is key. Rapid prototyping is her to stay Unforeseen connections will be discovered Rapid changing technologies Development in lab land will improve faster Wearable (easy moveable also) equipment Echo partly will, replace Rontgen technology (radiology be aware) and stethoscope functions (quick diagnostics) (4D-Echo/doppler) Diagnostic times will approve
Naming a few specifics The 3D-printer. Immense flexibility, no boundaries other than the physician imagination Mainly usage will be personalized anatomic correct parts This includes prostheses, pencils, splints that always fit, heart valves, organs, bone, cartilage etc. Big Data A 3D-printer will be using data analysed of Big Data Patient / hospital / personal information Wearables Smart watches Smart shirts (with sensors) the wearables sensors. Will result in real time values on critical patients. Like glucose, lactate. Heartrate and SpO2 Diagnostic will improve in speed and quality patient care will be improved
Decentral Healthcare development in ICT and Health Development in Health and ICT will decentralise healthcare to personal life environment. Standard procedures will be done in personal environments like homes. Measured values will be sent by through wireless connections to laboratories The Dutch Healthcare Ministry sets e-health goals 80% chronically ill and 40% off all other citizens has direct access to medical data in 2019 In % of chronical sick people and elderly will perform measurement at themselves monitored by the care taker companies
6 Technical area s 1. Sensor technology (wearables, monitoring); 2. Mechatronics (inclusive robotics and domotics); 3. Information technology; 4. Communication technology; 5. Biotechnology; 6. New materials.
Will you be disrupted or are you futureproof? Tech companies as health companies? YES!!! Big technology companies will disrupt health industry Apple, Google and Samsung for instance, will become health companies. Innovations in wearables, data analysing and diagnostic will lead to a change of physician so to speak. Your doctor will partly be replaced by these multinationals!! Will the medical labs be too?
Conclusions Remember? End situation might be a total of laboratory s What to do? Manage to be part of those, starting now!! Innovate your organisation to keep in the playing field
Conclusions (2) Rapidly evolving techniques will improve care Improved Doppler and contrast-echo techniques will lead to faster diagnostics and treatment without needing other specialists Wearable sensors will improve point of care 3D-printings flexibility will improve usage possibilities Everything goes digital Big data will be key in diagnostics Medical staff will be more specialists Virtual and augmented reality will be used for schooling of physicians and patients Health process will be more efficient and effective Labs will have to adapt all the way
The real challenge Start now to: Manage your future Manage your innovation Manage to get the needed information secure in the right place immediately Innovate and manage or stay behind
