1 E3120 Microbiology Fall 2016 The course consists of: 1)Lectures Tuesday V1 C100 NOTE Tuesday the lecture is at and (a 1 hr break in-between) Wednesday V1 C100 2) Electronic assignments 3) Exam Core content 2016 Structure and function and classification of bacteria, viruses, fungi and other micro-organisms Antimicrobial agents and antimicrobial resistance Infections, infectious disease and the immune system Microbial diseases by body system, virulence Microbial genetics, recombinant DNA technologies Industrial applications of microbiology The course aims at illustrating the interactions between the microbe, the growth environment and parameters influencing growth, in view of understanding microbial physiology and interactions with clinical and industrial relevance. 1

Course materials 1. Pearson Mastering Microbiology (MMB), electronic learning environment will be used 2. Students get access to the electronic version of the course textbook: Baumann: Microbiogy: with disases by the body system 3. Course power points (as pdf) can be accessed via Manage Documents in MMB print these for yourself and make notes 4. Chapter summaries of the book, which are very useful for reading (in Manage Documents section) 5. Electronic assigments can be found as assigments and the are 2 deadlines for the completion of the assigments: Monday (part I), Friday (part II) After the deadline, you can not complete these anymore. The assigments will take 1-1 ½ hours / per week. Students complete these individually. NOTE: CHP 8 Recombinant DNA is not part of course requirement for the exam, but there are a few electronic assigments that you should still complete. 2

CHP 21 here). The topics will be covered by focusing on selected microbes. WEEK 5 Tuesday Nordström: Chapter 19: Microbial diseases of the skin and wounds; Chapter: 20 the nervous system and eyes; The topics will be covered by focusing on selected microbes. Wednesday Turunen: Chapter: 25 Applied and environmental microbiology (with relevance to industrial microbiology) Part I WEEK 6 Tuesday Nordström, Chapter 22: Diseases of the respiratory system, Chapter 23: Diseases of the digestive system (incl. aspects of food handling from Chapter 25). The topics will be covered by focusing on selected microbes. Wednesday Chapter 25: Applied and environmental microbiology (with relevance to industrial microbiology) Part II Electronic assigments All assigments open on and you can start doing them immediately. Note that there are 2 different closing dates (deadlines) for the assigments: Part I 3.10.at pm Part II at pm After the deadlines, the assigments can not be opened anymore. You can not get a grade for the course if you have not achieved a minimum of 30 points for the electronic assigments. 4

6 Assessment / how your grade is formed Exam (75%) of grade Electronic assigments (25%) of grade The exam will have 5 questions, of which 3 are essays and others are short replies (multiple choice/ figures/ tables etc. To comment on). Max points for essays = 5 each, max total 15 points Max points for short questions = 7.5 points Electronic assigments = 5 points max (see next power point) Grading /Assessment (max 30 points) Exam max 3 essay answers (15 points) + and other short questions (7.5 points) Assignments: (max 5 points added) = 5 points added =4 points added = 3 points added = 2 points added =1 point added Below 20 points = no points added; you can not pass the course, because the electronic assigments are compulsory. 6
