Stéphanie Bordenave-Juchereau ADMISSION Your profile A min of 240 ECTS is required to apply to this second year of master. Graduates of recognized academic institutions outside France should hold an appropriate degree in biological sciences (biochemistry, biotechnology, marine sciences) to demonstrate their academic potential to the Admission Committee How to apply? The Admission Committee will evaluate the application form submitted Link for Application form : from april 2018 PROGRAMME Semestre 3

Applied Blue Biotechnology Master 2/8 Assays in Marine Biotechnology Assays: targets and dysfunction mitigation strategies During this course, student will learn how to propose and optimise assays Introduction : assays in blue biotechnology, IC50 definition, threshold, controls. Student will first learn how to perform various assays : using reactions, enzymes (measurement of inhibition or increase of activity), organites, cells (eukaryotes, prokaryotes), tissues, animals, humans. Part 1 : Target of an assay : what kind of biological activity can be assessed for human nutrition and health (metabolic syndrome (dyslipidemia, arterial hypertension, obesity, diabetes) ) cancer (angiogenesis, cell cancerization, apoptosis), skin health, ageing, oxidative stress. Part 2 : Target of an assay in the aquaculture domain, growth parameters, mortality, color, digestive activity, reproduction, welfare indicators. 12h (12h lectures) C BIOT Experience and validate assays During this course, student will learn about methods to handle MNPs, perform some assays and treat data obtained from such assays Part 1 : Methods for handling MNPs Extraction and fractionation Research-scale extraction and fractionation methods Industrial-scale extraction and fractionation methods Analysis of MNPs HPLC Mass spectrometry Advanced topics : elicitation, biological engineering, co-culturing Elicitation Biological engineering Co-culturing Part 2 : Relevance/performance of assays in blue biotechnology, economical evaluation/cost calculation of assays Part 3 : Practice Sampling and extraction of marine organism. Antimicrobial (cell scale) and antihypertensive assays (enzyme scale) will be performed. The angiotensin I converting enzyme, which is a key enzyme in the control of arterial hypertension, will be used as a model all along the practical course. Various substrates (natural, synthetic), enzyme sources (human, animal, extracts) and analytical material (spectrophotometer, spectrofluorimeter, RP-HPLC) will be tested to understand how far such parameters can modify results of the test. Pure known molecules as well as various extracts and hydrolysates will be tested. Data obtained will be statistically analysed. 39h (9h lectures - 30h practical work) C BIOT

Applied Blue Biotechnology Master 3/8 New assay development During this course, student will learn how to propose novel assays to identify new biological activities. Braistorm of biological activities lacking assays. Applications focused on human health and aquaculture Students will also learn about how to improve bioavailability and the metabolism of molecules in living organisms 12h (12h lectures) C BIOT Culture of marine organisms Biodiversity in the seas During this course, student will be able to : Provide an overview of the biological diversity of the organisms that prosper in our oceans, including viruses, prokaryotes, microbial eukaryotes and larger organisms ; Demonstrate understanding for how our unique marine genetic resources can be a rich source of valuable products and processes to be applied to various market opportunities ; Describe some of the approaches taken to collect, identify and harness the potential of the organisms in our seas. C BIOT Challenges and opportunities in aquaculture At the end of this module, students will be able to : Appreciate the role of blue biotechnology in addressing ongoing and future challenges in the culture of marine organisms to meet global demand for nutritious food ; Describe specific challenges driving innovation in aquaculture, particularly around diseases, genetic improvement and the feed requirements of aquatic organisms ; Explain some of the broader considerations around legal, social and environmental acceptability when collecting and culturing marine organisms. C BIOT

Applied Blue Biotechnology Master 4/8 Introduction to aquaculture At the end of this module, students will be able to : Describe systems used to cultivate common marine organisms for food and non-food products, including algae, fish and invertebrates ; Recognise the scale and extent of aquaculture across Europe and elsewhere, including an overview of value chains and knowledge of the key challenges facing these industries. 30h (9h lectures - 21h tutorials) C BIOT Employability Budget, plan, perform and report a project During this course, student will budget a biotechnological process, a project, a feed formulation contrast and validate results obtained in a project. Working with data (types, analysis, organisation, stats) how to develop a research grant application Report and present in adequate manner a project Critical reading, lab note books, records. C ODP Communication During this course, student will learn some words of at least two other languages than and mother tongue to be able to integrate a blue biotechnology team in Europe. Student will learn to convey ideas through a range of media. 24h (24h tutorials) DC COM

Applied Blue Biotechnology Master 5/8 Working in foreign countries Students will have an appreciation for commercialization and entrepreneurism and the roles that these play in marine biotechnology and achieve a basic understanding of intellectual property and its value. Students will learn : How to run a company Entrepreneurship Product development Business game Intellectual property To Apply to a job opportunity in foreign country C ODP Molecules from Aquatic Origin Biological Activities of Marine Natural Products During this course, students will study showcase of pharmacologically-relevant MNP bioactivities.
