2 Improve your career options The Post-Baccalaureate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences is designed for individuals who feel they need a stronger academic foundation in pharmaceutical sciences. Preparation provided by our program will benefit those interested in a PharmD, PhD, Master s degree, or careers in areas of pharmaceutical sciences. A certificate bearing the UC seal signifies a well-known, uncompromising standard of excellence. Start your future with us today.
3 Who should enroll 1. Individuals seeking to strengthen their application to competitive graduate programs in pharmacy or other health fields. 2. Individuals whose undergraduate degree are not in pharmaceutical sciences and who are seeking entry or advancement in a career related to pharmaceutical sciences or biotechnology including: production, control, research/development, regulatory affairs, and patents. Program Benefits Students will gain a solid understanding of pharmaceutical sciences through upper-division academic coursework. They will have the opportunity to participate in laboratory research and attend seminars that cover a variety of topics including PCAT preparation, graduate school applications, and interviewing skills. UCI is the #1 feeder to pharmacy schools nationwide. Our program is among the top-10 pharmaceutical sciences departments in the nation. Our faculty include world-renowned scientists encompassing a variety of backgrounds with wide-ranging research programs that cover every facet of pharmaceutical sciences. Program Requirements A certificate is awarded upon the completion of seven (7) core courses and two (2) electives. After you have completed all requirements you will receive an official certificate. Program Fees Application fee: $75 Program fee: $8,000 Students pay a per-course fee, which may vary according to the course and is subject to change (currently $1,236 for a 4 unit course). 4 Program Requirements Required Courses Completion of the below seven (7) core courses is required PHRMSCI 76. Ethics Conduct of Research. 2 Units. Covers the ethical responsibilities of biomedical scientists. Topics include, as discussions and case studies, the high standards of science, the responsible conduct of research, animal experimentation, and clinical trials as they relate to the pharmaceutical sciences. PHRMSCI 170A. Molecular Pharmacology I. 4 Units. Molecular basis of drug-receptor action at the molecular and cellular levels. Structure-function of drug targets emphasizing enzymes, ion channels, and membrane transport proteins. Understanding how the drugs mechanisms of action contribute to the development of more efficacious and safer drugs. Course may be offered online. PHRMSCI 170B. Molecular Pharmacology II. 4 Units. Mechanism-based overview of pharmacology and therapeutic drugs in the fields of autonomic nervous system, central nervous system, and antimicrobials. PHRMSCI 171. Physical Biochemistry. 4 Units. Thermodynamics and kinetic fundamentals as applied to problems relevant to pharmaceutical sciences such as receptor/enzyme-ligand interactions. Fundamentals of biophysical methods used in the pharmaceutical sciences including structure determination and biomolecular spectroscopy. PHRMSCI 173. Pharmacotherapy. 4 Units. An exploration of the clinical application of medications to selected disease states. Focus is on an understanding of underlying principles of pharmacology and how this knowledge can be applied to treatment of diseases. PHRMSCI 174. Biopharmaceutics and Nanomedicine. 4 Units. Introduces theories and tools of new drug formulations. Particularly new novel therapeutics based on biological materials, pathological characteristics utilized to achieve the maximum efficacy and specificity, and drug delivery systems based on emerging nanotechnology are extensively discussed. PHRMSCI 177. Medicinal Chemistry. 4 Units. An introduction of the basics of drug activity and mechanisms. Strategies used to identify lead compounds such as natural product chemistry, combinatorial chemistry, molecular modeling, and highthroughput screening. Relationship of molecular structure to pharmacological activity. Electives Completion of two (2) additional electives is required. Courses will be selected in consult with the program advisor based on individual goals. Enrollment is contingent on class availability. 5 Timeline Students will usually begin the program of study in Fall and take courses in Fall, Winter, and Spring to complete the program in one academic year.
