Recently secured a new 6 year grant for $20.5 million. Strength in materials and device fabrication has positioned UC Santa Barbara to influence a number of industries: Wireless and fiber-optic communications, New lighting and other energy alternatives, Biosensors, Satellite communications, Data storage, New catalysts in fuels, and plastics, Drug delivery and diagnostics Early pioneer in molecular beam epitaxy manufacturing process which enables the development of today s wireless and optoelectronic telecommunication devices

8 High Speed Electronics Technology Leadership Leader in compound semiconductor technologies Growing computer engineering group, leading in many areas of design, testing, verification, embedded systems Making the world s fastest transistors and the world s fastest amplifiers for radar, communications, and radio astronomy Superb clean room maintained, providing universal access to universities and companies across the country (33 companies thus far in 2005). Western Institute for Nanoelectronics. WIN participants come from three University of California campuses (Los Angeles, Berkeley, and Santa Barbara) and Stanford University and will focus on novel spintronics and plasmonic devices. In addition to its NRI funding, this center will also receive additional direct support from Intel and the UC Discovery program. WIN was recently launched and financially supported by the semiconductor industry. This collaborative model is testing new paradigms.

9 Photonics Technology Leadership The Photonics Group at UC Santa Barbara is targeting Silicon Photonics, Optoelectronics, Optical Networking and Communications creating the next generation of fully optical networks and signal transmission. Leadership position has initiated numerous National Multidisciplinary Centers focused on this research One of top 3 US research institutions with vertically integrated communications materials to device to systems research program (MIT and Stanford are others) Collectively over 130 students, scientists, and engineers conducting research in this area. Recent research grants include: $16 million LASOR (laser switched optical router) project includes DARPA, Cisco, Agility, Calient, JDS Uniphase, & Stanford $3.5 million DARPA grant to support wavelength multiplexing truly optical network $1.5 million Cisco funded grant to support optical label switching

10 Nanotechnology Technology Leadership Establishment of California NanoSystems Institute - which represents a multi-disciplinary collaboration with UCLA that has received >$100 million in funding from state of CA and industry. Working with the ultra small to discover new ways for information processing, semiconductor manufacturing, medical diagnostics and therapeutics, and advanced sensors. Center for Nanoscience Innovation for Defense: spintronics and quantum information processing, nanoscale electronics in semiconductors and molecules, nanophotonics for communication and computation, and nanomechanical sensors and devices UC Santa Barbara chosen for 2 NIH Program of Excellence in Nanotechnology (PEN) grants.
